IMPROVEMENT IN ATTAGHMBNT FOB LAMP- UHIMNEYS.

TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN: V
I Besitl known thet I, PMfnIcK M; SHEA,.of Ghieopee, .iu'the county ofIHampden, and Commonwealth-oi Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Attachment for theTops of Lamp Ohiiiineys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to; theaccompanyq ing drawings, making apart of thisspecification, and to'the letters of reference merke'd thereon, in.whioh' Figure 1 is an-elevzition of one form ofsaid attachment.
. Figure 2 is a. reverse plan of the seine, the hand being shown as extended to its lurgest area.
Figure 3 ice plan of the sam e, the hand being shownas contracted, so as to fit a smallerc'himney than-when adjusted as in fig. 2. i i Figure is an elevation ofa, diii'erent nearly straight chimney; r 1 l r Figure 5 is an elevation of the same, as applied upon a conical or tapering chimney; end

form of the attachment, adjusted s'o as to be used upon it straight or My invention is designed to he applied to t e tops of-the chimneys'of kerosene-lamps, gas lights, 8tc. ,'fot
the purpose of supporting above the chimney small vessels, the contents of which are to be heated. V
The support thus furnishe d, and' the vessel upon it, are .so placed-,ixpon the chimney thatthe flame of the lamp is not checked or disturbed, while the large amount of heat which passes out through the top of the" chim -ncy is brought directly in contact with the vessel to be heated, andthus utilized. r
The. attachment consists of acircular band'of thin sheet metal, the diameter of which can he varied inea'nsoi" a slot inone'end of the hand, and a. th'u'inbmut turning upon a stud set in the other end. Strips or fingers project outwardly from the upper edge of the band, assuppcrts'for the vess'clto be heated, these fingers being carried verticcllyupwalrdfor a short distance before being bent outward at a right angle, thus allowing a freepassuge forithe' current of heated air and smoke outward fromhenea'th the vessel.
Small-fingers also extend radially inward a'short distnnce, as rests, Whieh Set'up n the upper edge of the chimney, and support the attachment. By means of the thumb-lint und'slot infthebahd, .t'he attnchment con be adapted to fit snugly to chimneys of diflerent sizes, so as to afford a firm support fei" the vessel placed upon-it.
' As some chimneys are made cylindrical, or hot slightly tapering, while the upper endsof others, (as'tho bun-burner kerosene-lumps, so called,) are made with a. considerable taper-,1 make the circular hand either in a single pijecelfor'cylindrical'chimneys,or in sections, jointed together, in which latter method of construction the attachment may-be used upon a straight chimney, or adapted to those? which are conical or convergent at the'upper end}. w
Myinveu tion is designed mainly to he used in the place'otl the smell spirit-lumps, nurse-lumps, and the like implements, which are in common use for many domestic end business purposes, and furnishes a. cheap and simple uttadhment, by means of which any ordinary lamp having aichimney can he used as'a heater.
I The construction of my invention isas follows: In figs. 1, 2, and 3 is show'n the attachment," as madewith u continuous he nd A, having the elongnted slot a formedin one end, andthe stud s inserted near the opposite end; A male-screw thread is cut upon this stud, upon which thethnmh-nut s,-turns,-'a smiill'washer,'c, being placed heneuth the face of tlie nut.- The'narrow stripsfff are, by preference, formed of the some piece of sheet metal as the band, and are extended upward in the line .of the sides of ,the'bande short distance hnd then bent at o rightangle, as shown, and thus furnish; a support for the vessel which is to be heated. The small fingersfflf are also formed inpue piece with the band, and bent so as to extend radially inward. The attachment wilt thercfore'be.prevented from slipping down upon the chimney byj f f", -which will rest upon the top of the.chimney- By means oftho slot (1 end thumb-nut s, the band may be erpanded or contracted so as to encircle thetop of-the chimney closely, without clamping it so as to break the glass wheh the letter expands by heating.-
inward, substantially as set forth.
In figs. 4, 5, and Sis shown the attachment, as (made-with sections B B B, jointed" together by the rivets' Y 6 b. The elongated slot at is rade in the end of one section, and the pin a and its thumb-nut 8 applied tothe third of the jointed sections, so that the adjustment of the-.ar ea of the band-is -'the same as already set'i'erth. A fingeigf, extending outward, and a smaller finger, f, extending radially inward, are formed upon each one of the three sections B B B, and so placed that they will be about equidistant from one another. 1 These fingers are bent precisely as before described, so as to allow .a free circulationbeneath the vessel, and to support'the attachment upon-the top of the chimney.
' When the-attachment is adjusted to-fita cylindrical chimney, as shown in fig. 4, the sections form a continuous band, similar in appearance and useto the entire hand, seen in fig. 1; but tofit upon a chimney with a convergent top,'the sectionsmay be moved upon one another, so as to take a form corresponding with the taperingform of the given chimney, as shown in figs. 5 and 6. j v I If the chimney of the lamp or gas-light'sets securely in its socket, it is evident that the attachment may be adjusted to the chimney so as to afford a firm support for any vessel of reasonable weight which may be placed thereon.
The number of the jointed sections B B may be varied, buttho use of three'sections a-llows'the three fingerstobe kept nearly equidistant from one another better than if only two sections were used.
Havingdescribed my invention, what I claim as new therein, anddesireto secure by Letters Patent,=is- V 1. The combination and arrangementof'the continuous band A, slotted-at d, .and having the 'stud e and thumb-nut a, fingers f extending outward, and. small fingers f extending radially inward, substantially as'and for the purpose specified. o a 1 a v '2. An attachment for the tepsof lamp-chimneys, -composed'of two or more join-ted sections 13,, arranged so as to be adjustablerin diameter, and having projecting fingers -f, and the smallfi'ngers f extending radially In testimony whereof, Iliave hereunto set my hand, this 23d day of May, A. D. 1868. t t 1 q p PATRICK M. "SHEA.
