Description
' @uitrit Agratte gatrnt @ffice lJOHN REIST, oF PHILYADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 73,462, dated January 21, 1868,.
IMPROVED SHOEMAKEBJS IRIMMIN(ir-KNIFE.`
TO ALL'WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN REIST, of -Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvenin, have invented a new and improved Shoemakers Trimming-Knife; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists of a trimming-knife, with which shoemukers will not cut the upper leather nor the sewing` while trimming off the edges of the soles of boots or shoes, and'at the same time lighten the labor of this trimming, and to perform it neater and quicker', with less caution, so that anonexp'erienced hand can perform it. I y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and usemy invention, I will now proceed .to describe the construction of the same. On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved trimming-knife, complete and ready for use.
Figure 2 is a sectional view, representingl the guard, showing where it is slotted.
Fig. I. The knife-plate A is held inthe handle B by screw C, and may be taken out for the purpose of grinding, or to set it in position. The handle is provided with a'guaid, D, fastened by screw E to the handle. The guard D is slotted at d, fig. 2, in which the point of the knife-plate -A is inserted, preventing-3r ther-eby its cutting into the upper leather. The part d fl,'of guard D, will not allowvth'e knife to cut too near to the sewing,
las the dull edge of it will slide over the thread of the sewing, between'the solo and the upper. The guard is adjustable, so as to allow the knife to be used at different angles. l The guard is rst set to the angle of the sharp edge of the knife, fastened by screw E, and the knife-plate is pushed forward, so that lthe point of it is entered in the slot d, iig. 2, and then fastened with screw C, and it is ready for use. Thelmndle, as well as the guard, may be made of any suitable material, or may vary in shape.
WhatI claim as my/invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The slotted guard D, fastened -by screw E to handle B, substantially as and for the purpose above described.
JOHN REIST.
