eRoRG'R v, SHEFFIELD AND BYRON WHITGOMB, 0F WORCESTER, M ASSA GBUSETTS.
Letters Patent No.. 72,690, dated .December 24, 1867.
IMPROVED BELT-FASTENIN G.
KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS:
That we, GEORGE V. Sunrrnnn and BYRON Wm'rcoMB, both of the city and county of Worcester, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Fastenings; and we do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improved fastening, one end of which is shown attached to the end of o. belt, and v l Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section through the end of the belt and fastening, the section being shown through two of the points of two hooks.
Toennble those skilled in the art te which our invention belongs to make and use .the same, we will proceed to describe it more in detail.
In the drawings, A represents the central metal p art of the fastening, from which project the hooks a, the latter being formed from the same'strip of metal as the parts A. l
The operation is as follows: Strips of metal are cut out, of the proper size to form a. fastening, then the ends d cut or slitted, the ends cut pointed and then bent into hook-form, one half of the hooks beingforced out one way and the other half the other way, so as to leave u space, d, between their points to receive the end of belt B.
In applying the fastening to a belt, slight incisions may be made in the ends of the belt, i'or the points of the hboks a may be forcedinto the ends' of the belt without suzh incisions.
We prefer to make one half of the shanks b of the hooks on each end a little shorter, so that the points will stand when inserted relatively as shown in iig. 2. By this arrangement the hooks are not so'liable to tear out.
As one half of the hooks on each end of the fastening are applied to opposite sides of the and of the belt, the latter'is wellprotected from injuries and from all liability of striking against the shipper or belt-guides when in use.
Our belt-fastening is simple, and'not liable to get out of order,- and can be made very quick and cheaply.
If referred, the shauks b ma be cut ta erin so as to leaves. reater s ace between the hooks a, when P Y P g g P they are forced into the ends of .the-belt. l
Having described our belt-fasteningQwhat we claim therein as new and of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. A belt-fastening, constructed substantially as shown' and-described. 2. Making one half or a part of the Shanks of the hooks a-longerthan the others, for the purposes stated.
` GEORGE V. SVHEFFIELD,
BYRON WHITCOMB. Witnesses:
Tnos. H. Doven, D. L. MILLER.
