IMPROVEMENT IN BOLTS FOR SHUTTERS.
"dlp rlpttlc nient tu im tigen lettn's iztcut mit mating pat tt tigt time,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, PATRICK BURKE, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Bolt for Window-Shutters, Double Doors, kc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and numbers of' reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in making the two usual separating-parts oi' a shutter-holt, each to have a slide and a socket constructed and arranged upon the plate so that when both tho plates are applied to the shutters, the slide and the socket of one plate will correspond with tue socket and the slide of the other plate, and will interlock across the parting-line of the closed shutters, when the two slides are pushed together toward each other, substantially as hereinafter described, whereby but haltn of the usual extent of motion is required in the respective slides, and two bars are brought across the parting-line ofthe shutters instead of' one only, as heretofore, and therefore greater strength and security alici-ded by the said improved bolt, also greater facility a'orded in legitimately fastening and un'fastening the shutters.
Referring tothe drawing, A A are the two separating-plates ol' the bolt, B B their respective slides, and O C their respective sockets; the said plates being secured to a pair of window-shutters, which close together on the line a: y. The plates A A are made considerably wider at their opposing ends a am, than in the old single-slide bolt, for the purpose of affording proper foundations for their respective sockets G C', and slides B B. The forward ends 6 6 of the slides B B', are set olf laterally from and parallel to the main portion ofthe slides, respectively, at about hall` an inch distance, more or less, for a common-sized window, and so that their ends will be directly opposite to the sockets C C', respectively, when the plates A A are aligned on the shutters, as shown in the drawing. The main portion of each slide B B has a slot, 6', which, in connbination with a iat-headed stud, a4, fixed in the plate, serves to stop, at the proper points, the longitudinal motions given to the slide in operating it, and also to keep it down in close contact with the plate; 64 b" being the requisite thnmh-and-nger knobs of the said slides.
The drawing shows the two parte of the bolt as closed together over the parting-line x y of the two shutters, and when the slides B B are drawn hack, for opening the shutters, the said slides will, respectively, he in the positions indicated by the dotted lines. It will therefore be seen that the extent of the movements required in the slides B B, in bolting or unholting the shutters, is only about hall` that required in the saure-sized bolt having the single slide, and that when the shutters are closed and bolted, as shown, there will he two hars b I1 across the closing line of the shutters. Parallel with the set-oil` ends e Z1 of the slides BB, the main portions of tliesaid slides are extended forward so as to produce on the one slide, B, the tongue 1, and on the other, B, the two tongues 2 2, so that when the two slides are yclosed together these projecting portions, l, 2 2, will irterlnp across the line a: y ofthe shutters, as shown in the drawing; and it is intended to connect the two projections 2 2, by means of a cross-plate, (not shown fully in the drawing, but indicated by the faint lines 3 so as to make the same serve as a socket for receiving the tongue 1 beneath it, and thus give additional strength to the bolt as a. fastening.
Having thus fully described my improved bolt for window-shutters, double doors, dto., what I claim as new therein of/my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following, viz:
I claim a bolt, having its two separating-parts A A, provided with the slides B B, and the sockets C C', constructed and arranged to operate `together substantially as set forth and described, for the purposes speciiied.
' PATRICK. BURKE.
