- My invention consists in constructing a boiler in sections, with heads at each end of each section, with or without fines, as may 'be most desirable. These sections can be made to go together with telescopic joints, or there may be placed upon them proper lugs, which, when bolted together, will hold the sections firmly in place.

IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.

Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS W. NEWELL, of Bradford, in the county of McKcan, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufactureof Boilers for Generating Steam; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and making a part of this specification.
The objects I have in view in the construction of a boiler, as hereinafter described, are several. Among them may be enumerated the following:
First, by constructing a boiler in sections it is much more easily transported and set.
Second, the tendency to explosion is materially lessened, if not almost entirely obviated.
Third, in case of explosion the damage will be comparatively light, as, if the sections are properly constructed, I
the one which explodes will be the only section materially injured.
Fourth, should it be necessary to repair the boiler at any time, the section needing such repairs may be easily taken out andsent to the repair-shop, if required, saving the expense and trouble of taking outand transportingthe whole boiler.
Fifth,by removing one or more sections, if too much boiler-room is had, the expense of taking out and cutting off the boiler is done away with.
Sixth, if more boiler-room is at any time require may be necessary.
Seventh, the heating'surface of the boiler is more than quadrupled, thereby eilccting'a great saving in fuel. Eighth,'by the admission of air through appropriate apertures between the sections, combustion is greatly d, it can easily be had by adding one or more sections, as
increased and the gases consumed.
Ninth, the remaining sections, when one or two sections are removed for repairs the necessity of stopping work. p
My invention consists in constructing a boiler in sections, with heads at each end of each section, with or without fines, as may 'be most desirable. Each section is a separate and distinct boiler in itsclf,.with its appropriate steam and food-pipes and blow-oil cock. Thejoints of the steam and feed-pipes should be fitted with expansion-joints to allow for contraction and expansion. In setting these sections, they should be placed end to end, so that the flucs will be opposite each other in each section. By so setting the sections, a space will be left between the hcadsfor-hcating purmay be used, preventing poses,.aud into these spaces there should be openings to admit the outer air, by which means the combustion will be greatly increased and the gases consumed.
Having thus described the objects and construction of my invention, which I make of rolled metal, I will new name the various parts that are so accurately shown in the drawing, so that those skilled in the art can manufacture the sectional boiler.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is;-
1. The apertures F F I, 850., between the sections, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the sections A A, &c., the lugs B1 &c., or their equivalents, the steam-pipes C C, 8.70., provided with expansion-joints D D, at, or their equivalents, and the apertures or openings FF, 850., when constructedsubstantially as and for, the purposes described.
