Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. W. TURRELL, SAMUEL STANTON, AND L. O. WARD, OF NEWBURG, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY ATTACHMENTS FOR GAS-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,836, dated July 31, 1866; antedated May '7, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, L. W. TURRELL, SAM- UEL STANTON, and L. C. WARD, of N ewburg, in the coun ty ofOran ge and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Attachment for the Gas-Pipes of Oil-Wells; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable thoseskilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of our invention, taken in the line :v Fig. 2 5 Fig. 2, a transverse section of the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
In pumping up oil from oil-wel1s the fuel used for generating the steam which drives the pump consists wholly or partially of the gas which issues from the wells. This gas is conveyed, by means of a tube, from the Well to the furnace of the steam-boiler. It is an inexpensive fuel, but is attended with danger on account of being so very iniiammable, the gas being liable to ignite at the junction of the gas-pipe with the furnace and cause an eXplosion destructive to life and property.
Our invention consists in inserting in the gas-pipe, at a point between the well and the furnace of the steam-boiler, one or more partitions of wire-gauze or wire-cloth, so as to prevent, in case of the ignition of the gas, the flame communicating with the gas in the well, it being well known that a flame cannot pass through wire-gauze or fine wire-cloth.
- A represents acoupling, which connects the two parts, B B, of a gas-pipe for an oilfwell,
and C represents a series of Wire-gauze or wirecloth partitions, between which skeleton disks or rings D are interposed in order to admit of suitable spaces being between the partitions, as shown in Fig. l. These wire-gauze parti' tions C and disks or rings D are secured between the ends of the two parts B B of the gas-pipe by the coupling A, as shown clearly in Fig. l.
We do not confine ourselves to any particular means or arrangement for securing the wire-gauze partitions within the gas-pipe 5 nor do `we conflne ourselves to any particular number of said partitions, as one may be used, but a plurality of them would be most advisable.
By this invention the llame, in case the gas within the gas-pipe ignites near the furnace, cannot be conveyed or communicated to the well, as the wire-gauze partitions will prevent the passage of the flame through them. Hence the danger of explosions from that cause will be fully obviated. The gas, it will be understood, will pass freely through the partitions.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the gauze disks O O O, rings D D, and coupling A B, arranged and applied in the manner and for the purposes specified.
