` IMPROVEMENT IN SAFETY-ATTACHMENTS FOR POCKETS.

Specification forming fart of Letters Patent No. 58,120, dated September 18, 1866.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN'METZENDORF, of the city, county, and State of New York,have invented a new and useful device, which I term a Watch-Pocket Protector,77 for securely holding a watch in the pocket; and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an edge view of the device in a closed position. F1g.2 is a similar view in an This view also shows one of the modes of securing the device to the vest or other garment. Fig. 3 is a side View taken at right angles to Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a view of the hinged end with a portion in section, and Fig. 5 is a view of the end opposite to that shown by Fig. 4..

The object ot this invention is to insurethe safe custody of a watch in the pocket against the attempts ofpickpockets to abstract it. It consists of a clasp of novel construction, applied within and forming a lining to the mouth ot`,the pocket, as hereinafter described.

To enable others skilled in the art to construct my invention and apply it to use,fl will describe it with reference to the drawings.

Two jaws or metallic pieces, A and B, are hinged together at one end, and are held in a closed position by means ot' a catch, f, in the jaw A, which is held by a spring latch or bar, g, in the jaw B.

The lower jaw, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4, a-nd 5, is provided with two or more eyelets, C C, on its outer or lowerside, which are intended to be passed through holes or slits in the inner side of the mouth of the pocket ot' the garment in which the Watch is carried,

and through these eyelets are to be passed small split rings, or other suitable fastening, (as clearly shown by Fig. 2 in red ontline,) to secure the device to the clothing inside of the pocket. When the device is fastened in the pocket, the` watch is introduced through the open jaws A and B, and the movable one A is then closed by being simplypressed upon, which will cause it to close' over the ring of the watch, and the jaw A will catch or lock on the spring-bolt g in jaw B. The watch is then held securely in the pocket and cannot be removed without alarming the wearer of the same in .time to save his property; but when the wearer desires to withdraw his watch from the pocket he can do so by simply touching the knob D on the end of the bolt g, which is held locked by a spring, d, and this liberatesor allows the jaw A to open by means of a small volute spring, E, which is situated in a recess in the tenon part ot' the, hinge, and the free end ot' the spring acts against the center-pin e, which is made square on one end to prevent its turning in its socket and insure the working ofthe spring in throwing the jaw A open when desired.

The inner opposite side ofthe twojawsAand B may be rounded off a little -to allow an easy ingress or egress of the watch into orI between them, and at the same time prevent the watch from being' bruised or scratched by any sharp edges comin gagainst the same. In order to still more perfectly prevent the watch from being damaged, the two jaws may be lined or faced with velvet, plush, or any other soft :and pliable matexial. The two jaws A andB, instead of being hinged together, may be connected y at the end by a spring, which, when the catch at the other end is unt'astened, will open the jaws.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLLetters Patent, isy A watchpocket protector composed of two jaws, A and B, flexibly connected together at one end and furnished with a catch at the other end, and` provided with eyeletsor other means of attaching it to the pocket, all substantially as herein described.
