IMPROVEMENT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OP'PAGOT FOR BEAM.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, WYATT W. MILLER, of Safe-Harbor, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Penusylvania, have invented a new and improved Fagot for Beams; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full,'clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming partei this specification.
Figure 1 represents a; side elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation, showing the method of connecting the plates, and
Figure 3 an end elevation of a modiiication'of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the drawing.
This invention relates to a new manner of forming piles for fagot for large double-flange beams for building bridges and other structures, and it consists'in composing the Whole fagot of Hat piates, and connecting them i together by means of bars dove-tailed into the ends of such plates, so that the fagot, when thus made, will represent, as nearly as'possible, the shape ofthe finished beam.
In the drawings, A A are bars rolled'into the required width and thickness, and provided, at their ends,l
with transverse dove-tailed grooves, at regular distances apart, und cut into the required length. These plates form the top and bottom ofthe pile or fagot. rI he web is composed of upright or horizontal plates B B, which are interposed between the plates A A, as Ashown in the drawings. The whole is then united bysuitable-4 bars C C, which are let into dove-tailed slots in the top and bottom plates or flanges, and inthe web Hush with the' ends ofthe pile. In fig. 3 the bars C are dove-tailed into the flanges upon the outer sides of the web formed of vertical plates, .by which means such web is held in position. Instead of having but one plate A en the top and bottom, two or more can be employed, as is shown in iig. 3.
Afagot Vthusmade can bc easily handled when piled preparatory to being heated for rolling into the required shape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The--fagots for piling beams of smooth top and bottom plates A A, vertical or horizontal plates forming the web B, all'secured together by the bars C, dove-tailed into such top and bottom plates Hush with their ends, and into the web B or upon its outersides, substantially as herein shown and described'.
vThe above specication' of my invention signed by me this 11th day of July, 1867.
WYATT W. MILLER.
