Description
NITED STATES PATENT Giirrcnc C. WrSTAFFORD, OF SAYBROOK, CONNECTICUT.
IMPRCVED PAVEMENT.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 66,Q01, dated June 25, 1867; antedated Maich 27', 1867.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. W. STAFFORD, of Saybrook, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pavements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made part ot' this specication, and in which- Figure l is a view in perspective of a section of my pavement, showing band and keys. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a row of blocks, taken from one end ot' a section of my pavement and laid upon their sides, showing longitudinal arrangement of keys. Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation of a section of my pavement as it would appear it' a portion of the outer part thereofwere removed.
This invention consists of a pavement composed of wooden blocks set on end, in sections, the blocks in each section being held together by an iron band and cross-keys.
A represents blocks of any desired size, and of any suitable wood, parallelopipedous in shape, so cut that the ends running tra-nsversely ot' the grain of the wood are oblong, except in the cases of the blocks at the extremities of alternate rows, the ends of which are square, in order that all the blocks may break joints. A suitable number of these blocks are placed together, so as to form a section, as shown in Fig. l, and are held together in the section by an iron band, B, passing round the outside thereof, in a recess made in the outer blocks for that purpose, the band not being equal in width to the depth of the recess, in order that it may not prevent contiguous sections from being placed in close contact. Wooden cross-keys C run transversely through the section in similar recesses, the function of the cross-keys being to prevent displacement of the blocks from upward or downward pressure. A convenient number of the sections thus constructed, placed in contact on a suitable foundation, t'orm a pavement.
Each block, before it is placed in lits section, is coated with hot coal-tar, and after the sections are formed, the cracks between the blocks are Iilled with sand dried in a furnace. The sections are thus thoroughly prepared before they are put down, and a pavement may therefore be made ot' them with great rapidity.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. I claim the constructing of sections ot' pavement composed of metallic bands, grooved blocks of Wood, and keys, substantially as and for the purpose set forth and described.
2. I claim a pavement made up of sections of wooden blocks, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 20th day of March, 1867.
C. W. STAFFORD.
