UEL REYNOLDS, OF NEW YORK, N. .Y. Letters Patent No. 69,251, dated September 24, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN AT TAOHING YOKES TO POLES FOB. UARRIAGES.
ube e%tbibule l'tftttth ta in fl rts jitters 33mm inn mating 13311 at flgt tame.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, UEL REYNOLDS, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, a certain new and useful Improvement in Attaching Yokes to Poles'for Carriages, 820.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a side view of the end of the pole and its attachment for the yoke, showing also the yoke in section, and i Figure a plan of the yoke near the middle, and of the attachment to the pole.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
The objectoF my invention is to furnish a cheap, neat, strong, and easily operated attachment for the yoke to the pole in carriages. The said invention consists in a metal eye near the end of the pole,-with one side notched, in combination with stop horns applied on the yoke in such a manner that the yoke can be easily con-- nected or disconnected from the eye, one of the horns passing through said notch. By this construction avery strong andneat attachment is provided, that dispenses with the unsightly leather straps and eyes heretofore generally employed. I
In the drawing, a represents aportion of the end of the pole upon which is fitted the metal socket I), having on its upper side an eye, 0, that may be made more or less ornamental, as shown. In one side of the eye 0 is a notch, (Z, formed in the metal. I prefer to have the same near the union of the eye and socket at the front part. The yokefis made in any usual manner, with a recess near the middle thereof, and into this I introduce a strip of leather or an India-rubber band, the latter preferred. The size of this is such that it fits loosely the eye c. I employ stop horns it 2', formed of metal, and projecting from a plate countersunk and screwed into the yokef. One of these horns it is of a size to pass through the notch (l, the other, 2', should be larger. After the yoke and horn it have been passed. through the eye a and notch tl, the partial rotation of said yoke brings the stop horns up at the sides of the eye 0, and thereby the yoke is retained in place. i
What I claim, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-- I The eye a and notch d'upon the socket b, in combination with the yoke f and stop horns l1. and 2', substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 22d day of June, A. D. 1867.
UEL REYNOLDS. Witnesses:
Geo. D. WALKER, I GEO. T. PINCKNEY.
