Description

@eine tetrisI getint ffies;
H. BAR'IHOLOMEW, OF DOVER CENTRE, OHIO. Lcf'tcrs Patent No. 69,961, dated October 22, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT 1N EENGE.
TO ALD WllO.\I IT MAY CONGERN:
-Be it known that I, Il. B.-\u'r11or.o.\ns\\', of Dover Centre, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new und useful improvements in Farm-Fences;- and I do hereby declare that the following is :t full and complete description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a side view of the fence.
Figure 2 is an end view.
Figure 3 is a fence corner.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views. A
In fig. 1,l\ represents a fenee-panel', which :is constructed ots' four or more boards, B, nailed or otherwise secured to'cross-pieces or cleats, C. 'lzhese panels are supported and locked together by the posts D, lig. 2, which consists of a sill, E, and posts F, stayed by the braces G, and secured at the top by the Cleat H. The posts F, referred to, nreplaeed so far apart` as to allow the ends of the boards of the panel to be inserted between them, lapping hy euch other, as shown in g. 1, and which are thus held from any lateral displacement. In order to prevent the panels from pulling apart endwise, a deep notch 'is eut in the end of a. hoard or rail of each panel, 'und made to fit and hook upon the cleat H, as shown in fig. 1, in which figure H is the cleat, and H the rails or liars in which the said notch is cut. By this device astrong, neat, and easy locking together of the panels is made, which cnn be put up and taken down with great facility. In order to turn square corners-with this fence, a post, I, fig. l., is made, as follows: Four pieces ot` boards, of the proper length and width for the post, hre nailed together, forming a box, as shown in g. 3. Before nailing them together, however, square notches, J, are cut in one edge of the boards, of the proper size to receive the end of the rails ofthe fence-panel. Nonnen trailing them together, one sidepiece covers the notchesout in the other, and thus makes a mortise into which the ends of the rails` are put, :ts shown in fig. 3, and thus a strong and inexpensive post is produced, and which can be used for turning corners of any degree of angle, or one'such can be used alternately 'with the triangular post D on a line of straight fencing, and thus add to the elieapness and neat appearance of the fence.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The special construction and arrangement of the herein-described fence, in the manner substantially as described.
