NEWTON,J. GLOVER, OF WAVELAND, INDIANA. Letters Parent No. 69,654, dated ombe- 6, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCE.
y Be it. known that I, NEWTON JrGLoVER, of Waveland, in the county of Montgomery, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Portable Fence; and do hereby declare that the following is a full. and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction. I use three small posts to each panel of fence, one in the centre and one at each end, but on opposite sides, that the posts will be on the inside corners when the fence is up. The corners are secured by lock-strips N N,
.which stand edgewise in the spaces between the two upper and the two lower planks ofthe fence. To the centre of these strips are fastened blocks VV, and on the opposite side, at each end, are cleats O 0 O O, extending in length beyond the width of the strips N N, to which they fasten. As the fence is put up and set at the proper worm or zigzag, the cleats O O O O press against or draw in the outer corners ofthe fence, until the posts press against strips N N and blocks V V, thus forming a substantial lock ofthe corners. The fence is put up or taken down by setting the panels a suicient'angle to allow the lock-strips to turn up or down, to pass them in or out ofthe spaces described. By letting the end posts of the panels rest against each other, blocks VVcould be dispensed with, but their use makes a more substantial fence; besides, their thickness adds length to the same. Until the fence is sct up I put but one nail at eaehplace where the planks cross the posts. This allows the panels to adjust to the unevcnn ess ofthe ground. Blocks or stone are proper under the corners, and, if desired, the fence will vbe more secure by driving a stake at some of the corners and nailing to the same; and strength is further added by nailing the lock-stripsN N to the posts where they cross the same.
I am awarethat many plans are known to make portable fences, but nohe with the panels locked together in the same manner us this. i
I will now state what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
I claim a portable zigzag fence, withlthe panels separated and supported by the wedges V V and braces N N, as constructed and shown.
NEWTON J. GLOVER.
