ABRAHAM N. BRENEMAN, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent `No. 69,754, dated October 15, 1867; *.antedated October 1 2, 1867.
IMPROVED SHOE-HOLDER.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN.:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM N. BRnNEMAN, of Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster, and State of Penn- Sylvania, havey invented a new implement or device for holding shoes, called a Shoe-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description 'of the construction and operation of the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings making' a part of this speoiicatiou, in which- Figure 1 shows the combination of its parts closed in the foot, for being introduced into a shoe.
Figure 2, the same .with the foot portion spread out. l
Figure?) shows the parts separated, with a. part of the hinge en each, and the pin withdrawn.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a. series of holders, say four or five, one of which can be selected at a glance, inserted with ease, and at once adapted to the shoe, without the vexatious loss of time incurred in selecting the proper last from a large collection; besides th'e handles, for dressing up shoes, for patching, or otherwise repairing the 'upper parts of shoes, a`ord a facil-ity in handling them so as to answer a much better purpose than a common last.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will state simply that it is composed of-two parts, of solid, close-grained'wood, A B, as shown, united by a hinge, let into the joining faces of the wood, each portion of the hinge separately, so that whenthe pin is inserted into thejoints of the hinge, both pieces are united, being shaped 'somewhat like a. brogan or high-cut'bootee, with a prolongation to each part on the faced sides, forming the combined handle. The triangular piece cut out below the hinge from the front part A, including nearly the whole of the shank, gives great play and adjustability to the parts, and affords a leverage for a. tight grip', as well as for filling ont the shoe thoroughly, so admi'ably adaptedfor numerous purposes of daily use in the trade, that I nd, after using itfor upwards of twenty months past, to be indispensable. Its extreme simplicity is only surpassed by its utility, and simple as it is, I believe it quite as novel,V and my experience has taught me the value of it, which will` be fully appreciated. by every dealer in the shoe to make it.
I am aware that there are contrivances for holding shoes, but I am not aware of any implement constructed lin the manner shown, ever used, before invented by myselfA and introduced in my business.
What Iclaim as my invention, and'desi'reto secure by Letters Patent, is The construction and combination ofthe frontpiece A and back piece B, united by a hinge, C D E, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
A. N. BRENEMAN.

business. As a. combined implement, the drawings so clearly show the construction-as to enable any mechanic-
