Definitions
- This invention relates to a wrench which is of very simple construction and of great strength, and which can be easily adjusted to work of diFferent kinds..
- the invention consists in having a. wedge-shaped stem for the stationary jaw, said stem being slotted.
- the movable jaw is provided with a screw, which is passed lthrough the said-slot, and by means of a nut the movable jaw is held ilrplace.
- the stem of the wrench being narrower at the top, and gradually gettingl wider towards the handle, prevents the movable jaw from slipping ⁇ down on the stem.
- my invention 4 is illustratedi Figure 1 being a side view, partly in section, of my improved wrench.
- Figure 2 being a horizontal sectional view of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line :l: x, lig. 1. i
- A is the handle of the wrench, the upper part, a, of which is wedge-shaped, as shown, being wider at the bottom than'at the top.
- the jaw b is rmly secured to A in any desirable manner.
- the wedge-shaped part a is provided with a slot, c, as shown, through which a screw, ⁇ d, passes, so that the movable jaw c may be secured in place by means of the nutf. That portion of the screw d which is in the slot c, or a portion ofthe same, is made square, so as to prevent the jaw e from turning.
- the movable jaw cannot slip down unless the nut is partly unserewed, but it can he easily moved up when desired. It will be seen that this wrench is of very simple construction, and has the advantage of great simplicity and strength over all the wrenches now made.

BENJAMIN S. LAWSON, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 70,005, elated October 22, 1867; antedated October 19, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRBNGHES.
ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN S. LAWSON, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a'new and improved Wrench and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had `to theaccoinpanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a wrench which is of very simple construction and of great strength, and which can be easily adjusted to work of diFferent kinds..
The invention consists in having a. wedge-shaped stem for the stationary jaw, said stem being slotted. The movable jaw is provided with a screw, which is passed lthrough the said-slot, and by means of a nut the movable jaw is held ilrplace. The stem of the wrench being narrower at the top, and gradually gettingl wider towards the handle, prevents the movable jaw from slipping` down on the stem. In the accompanying drawing my invention 4is illustratedi Figure 1 being a side view, partly in section, of my improved wrench.
Figure 2 being a horizontal sectional view of the same, the plane of section being indicated by the line :l: x, lig. 1. i
Similarletters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the handle of the wrench, the upper part, a, of which is wedge-shaped, as shown, being wider at the bottom than'at the top. The jaw b is rmly secured to A in any desirable manner. The wedge-shaped part a is provided with a slot, c, as shown, through which a screw,`d, passes, so that the movable jaw c may be secured in place by means of the nutf. That portion of the screw d which is in the slot c, or a portion ofthe same, is made square, so as to prevent the jaw e from turning. On account of the tapering form ofthe Stern a, the movable jaw cannot slip down unless the nut is partly unserewed, but it can he easily moved up when desired. It will be seen that this wrench is of very simple construction, and has the advantage of great simplicity and strength over all the wrenches now made.
claim as new, and desircito secure by Letters Patent- The slotted tapering` wedge A, in combination witl the movable jaw e, screw d, and nut f,.all made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
BENJAMIN S. LAWSON.
