TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DAVID I. STAGG, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Attachment for'School-Desks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make andl use the same, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a new and useful attachment for school-desks, for the purpose of holding or supporting drawings, maps, or any papers while being copied. The invention consists iu having a frame or a drawing-board fitted in a slot or opening in the desk, and arranged in such a manner that the frame or board, when desired for use, may be raised up and adjusted in proper position relatively with the occupant of the desk, to receive the drawing` or other article to be copied, and when not desired for use, capable of being lowered or let down within the opening of the desk so as to be entirely out of the way. In the accompanying sheet of drawings-- Figure l is a transverse vertical section of a school-desk provided with my invention.
Figure 2 a front view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A. represents a school-desk, which may be constructed in any of the known forms, and has an oblong slot or opening, a., made in its top, near its back-board b, and B represents a frame which is made of such dimensions that it may pass down through the slot or opening a, und be supported bythe ends of the top rail c of the frame, :is shown in red in both figures. To each side of the frame B there is attached a spring-catch, C. These catches support the frame when it is drawn up, as shown in lig. 2, and when pressed inward or towards the frame, admit of the latter being dropped down within the desk or in front of the hack-board Zi. In lieu of the frame B, a drawing-board may be used. Either will answer equally well, but the drawing-board has the advantage of a double use, for when not required to hold a drawing, or other article to be copied, it may be raised u p out of the desk and used as an ordinary drawing-board.
'llhis invention may be applied to any ordinary desk in use, and in long or continuous desks, the frames or boards may be inserted in them at suitable distances apart, so that a frame or board will be opposite each seat of the desk.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- The sliding frame B, constructed -as described, havingthe extended top supporting rail c, and attached to the desk by means of the spring-catch C, said frame adapted to fit in the slot a of the desk, substantially as described for the purpose specified.
DAVID I. STAGG.
