IMPROVED SCHOOL SET'IEE AND DESK.
Etta 5:11am: were to in this: Eaters 33mm agitating pm at 1112 smut.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, Jenn PEARD, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved School Settee and Desk, and that the following descriptiom-taken in connection with the accompany ing drawings hereinafter referred to,-forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the nature and principles ofmy said improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of a similar class, together withsuch parts as I claim and desire to have-secured to me by Letters Patent.
This inventionrelates'toa new and improved combination of a school settee and desk, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a very cheap and durable article of the kind specified is obtained andone which will admit of being compactly foldedwhen not required for use, and contain both a book and'a slate rack. In.
the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of my invention in a folded state taken in the line a: :v, fig. 3. Figure 2, atransverse vertical sectionof the same in an unfolded or distended state taken in thelineyy, fig. 3Q Figure 3, aplan or top'vicw of'the same. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
AArepresen'tthe two side pieces of the combined settee and desk l These side pieces are of cast iron, each cast in a single piece, and have bases a at their lower ends, through which screws pass into the door to firmly secure the article inzposition. B represents the back of the settee, which is of wood, and provided with a top rail, b having a recess or opening, 0, in it to receive the inkstand. This wooden-back is ,firmly secured between the side pieces," and also an oblong box, C, which serves as a book-rack, and a narrow box, D, directly behind U, which serves as a slate-rack, both boxes being of wood. vE represents the dtsk, also constructed of wood, so as to form a smooth, plane'surface, and provided at each side, at its inner end,.niith metal strips a having pins d d to fit into grooves e in the inner surfaces of the side pieces A A. These grooves are inclined, as shown in figs. 1 and 2, and the front edge ofisaid groove is rounded at its upper end and inclinedsliglitly from a horizontal position to serve as a support for the desk when drawn'out' and adjusted for use, the pins hea'ring'against the upper ends of the grooves 0. (Sec fig. 2,) When the desk is not required for use it is slipped. down betweenv the side pieces A A, as shown in fig. 1, the pins (1 01 working in the grooves e, serving as guides. Thus, by this simple arrangement the desk, when not required for use, may be adjusted out of the way wholly within the compass of space comprised within the side pieces A A. F represents the seat, also :constructed of wood, and having metal bars or stripsf attached to its ends, with a slot, g, in each to receive pins 7:. at the upper ends of metal supportsG G, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the side pieces A A, as shown at h, the bars or stripsf being pivoted to the side pieces A A, as shown at 9*. 7
By this arrangement it will be seen that theseat F may, when not required for use, beraised up out-of the-way, (see fig. 1,) or turned down whenrequired for use, as shown in fig. 2. The device is extremelysimple and efiicient may be very economically constructed, and is extremely strong and durable, there being no parts liable to get out of repair or become deranged by use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to securc by Letters Patent- 1. The sliding desk E, containing the metallic strips a arranged in .the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
.2. The seat F, provided with slotted metal'bars or strips f at its ends, in combination with the pivoted sup-' ports G G, having pins Ii at their upper ends to work in the slots of the bars or stripsf, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of thesliding desk E with the pivoted seat F and supports G Grand the side pieces A A, all arranged substantially as and forthe purpose specified. r
4. The book-and slate-racks C D, in combination'with the desk -E,- pivoted seat F, and side pieces A A,
substantially as and for the purpose-setforth.
JOHN PE ARD.
