Description

B. D PHASE. REIN HOLDER,
No. 69,474. Patented 0013.1, 1867.
@auch i'tats @anni @ffice BUEL D.. PEASE. OF MADISON., PENNSYLVA'IA. Letters Patent No. 69,474, elated October 1,1867'.
IMPROVEMENT IN REIN-HOLDER.
TO'ALL WHQM IT MAY OONCERN;
Be it .known that I, BUEL D. PHASE, of Madison, in the county of Luzerne, and State of Pennsylvania., have invented a new and improved Rein-Holder; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, und exact description thereof,x which will enable those skilled in the' art to make and use the same,l reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved rein-holder. i
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through the line c: a', fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
)Iy invention has for its object to. flirnish un improved rein-holder for attachment to the'dash-board of a. wagon or carringe,which shall be so constructed as to hold the reinssecurely, and at the same time allow them to be instantaneously detached; and it consists in the combination of the frame; cam, and springfwitheach other, in the manner hereinafter more fully described.
' A is the frame, the lower part of which may be made plaiuorornamex1tai,anll which is secured tothe dashboard by screws or rivets, according as the said dash-board may be mede of wood or other material. The frame A is made with a-shoulder, which rests upon theupper edge of the dssh-board. The upper part of the frame is open at one edge, havingA a horizontal arm, al, projecting in a. lin e-with the dash-board, and connected to the lower pnrt ofthe frame by a vert-ical arm, a. B is a cam, which is pivoted to the upper part of theframe by a rod or pin, C, passing through ears formed upon the ends of the-said cam B, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The face of the cam B may be made smooth, or it may be corrugated longitudinally to enable it to take a. more secure hold -upon the reins. D is a spring coiled around the rod C, o ne end of which rests in a. recess formed in the arm a of the frame A for its reception, and its other end rests against a projection, b', formed upon the cam B for that purpose. By this construction the spring D always holds the cam B forward in proper position to clamp the reins and hold them securely. Should the horses draw upon the reins when thus secured, the only c'ect will be to cause the cam to, clamp them more closely,v and at the same'tin'ie, by pulling slightly upon the' free onds of the said reins and moving them to one side, they will be instantly freed from the holder. Incase the holder is to bo attached to a leather or other light dash-board5'a plate, E, may be. attached to the upperpart or shoulder of the frame LA, extending down infront of the dash-board, to receive and support the screws or rivets by which the said yholder is secured to the said dash-board; but in the case of' wooded or other heavy dash-boards the plate E is unnecessary.
I claiml as new, and desire Qto secure -by Letters Patent I An improved rein-holder, formed by the combination of the frame, Acam B-,and spring D with each other, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 28th day of May,' 1867. l
