TO` ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERNz.
Be it known that we, G. F. Hrrr and J. B. FasL-.of Nova, in the couutyof Ashland, and State of Ohio, ha've invented a new and useful Improvement in Hay-Elevators;v and we do hereby declare that the'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1' is a vertical section of our improved machine taken through the line :u 2:, iig. 2.
Figure 2 is a top or plan view of the same.
Similar letters of' reference indicate like parts.
Our invention has-for its object to furnish an improved machine i'or operating a hay-fork or elevator more conveniently and satisfactorily; and 'it consists in the wheel and sweep constructed, arranged, andoperated substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
The dimensions ofthe various parts givenin the following description are to be taken as merely suggested, the absolute dimensions depending upon the circumstances of each case and the work the machine is required to do.
A are the sills, which cross cach other at right angles at thc centre, where they are notched together, as shown in the drawings. 'lhe sills A are eight inches broad, ve inches thick, and of sutlicicnt length to give stability to the machine. Bis the post to which the wheel is-pivoted, which is four inches in diameter, passes 4through a mortise in the sills'A, and extends beneath thein about ten inches, being strengthened and firmly secured in place by the braces C, attached to its lower end and to the Alower sides of the sills A. Dis the wheel, which is siirfeet in diameter. `The sides of tho wheel D are made of timbers, d', one and a halt` inch lthick, and which are eight inches wide at -thevcentre, tapering to four inches wide at the ends. 'lwo of the timbers d' crossrand are notched into eachother at the centre, and the others are fitted into the angles formed by their intersection. The centres ofthe sides D are strengthened by planks E, one anda half inch thick and twenty inches square, rmly bolted to said sides, as shown in figs. 1 and 2. The sides D arc placed one foot apart, and they arc connected to each other and kept intheir proper relative positions by the timbers F, which arc two and a half inches square, and are mortised into the arms d ofthe sides'D, near their ends, as shown in thedrawings. The ends of' thc contiguous arms CZ ot' each side are connected to each other by the braces G,
-which are four inches broad, one inch thick, and of sufficient length to reach from arm to arm ol' the sides D.
H are hobks attached to the lower sides of theends of the arms d of the lower side D, to prevent the rope I from dropping from the wheel when slackened. ,J is the sweep, which has a hole through it ,about three inches in diameter, through which passes the upper end oi the post l. K is an iron brace, the ends ot' which are attached to the sweep J, and its middle part is pivot-cd to the top of the post E by a screw-bolt passing through the said brace and screwing into the top of' the said post, L is a clutch or hook pivoted to oneside of the sweep J in such a position that when dropped down it will catch upon one or the other. oi' the arms OZ of the upper side of the wheel, and carry the said wheel with 'it to raise thefork and hay; but when turned up thesweep and Wheel will each revolve independently of the other, so that the fork can bedrawn back andthe rope, I, nnwound from the wheel without backing the horse. I is thc rope which is attached to the rim oi' the wheel, and passes thence over the necessary guide-pulleys to the hay-fork- -What weV claimas new, and desire to secure by Letters `Patent, isl The wheel and sweep J, in combination with each otherfuwhen said wheel and sweep are constructed, arrangedfandoperated substantially as herein shown and described; and'for thc purpose sot forth.
Gr. F. HIPP, J. B. FAST.
