Description
IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICEe JAMES MADISON MILLER, OFGREEN WOOD TOWNSHIP, CRAWFORD COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA IMPROVEMENT IN LOADING ATTACHMENTS TO HAY-WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,936, dated May 22, 1866.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MADISON MIL- LER, of Greenwood township, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Hay and Wagon Loader; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of' reference marked thereon.
The drawing represents one side ot' a common hay rack with my invention attached thereto and in Working order, the same being represented only so far as is necessary to fully understand the construction and operation of the same.
M M is a eogged driving-wheel bolted onto the spokes of the hind wheel of a wagon, and may be removed or put on at pleasure.
N is a smaller cogged wheel, which gears into the wheel M M. The wheel N is a drumwheel, or has a drum on the rim, around which the rope H H is wound as the wheel revolves. rIhis wheel is thrown in and out of gear with the wheel M M by means of the lever D and bar E E, the wheel N being` attached to the bar E E.
P O O is a crane att-ached to the wagonrack A A so that it will revolve easily. 1 2 3 are pulleys to guide the rope H H onto the drumwheel N.
To operate 1n yinvention the wagonis placed alongside of a hay-cock or windrow and the fork S forced into the same by a man on the ground. The driver on the wagon now throws the wheel N in gear with the wheel M M by means ot' the lever D being placed in the position shown in the drawing, when the rope H H is wound up and the forkful of hay or grain hoisted up to the end of the crane-arm P, when the crane is swungin and the hay dropped in the rack or on the load. When this is done and the fork released the lever D is drawn back to the latch G on the semicircle F, and the wheel vN thereby thrown out of gear, and the fork is drawn down (the wheel N revolving,` easily on the bar E E) until the rope is unwound and the machine is again ready for use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Pa-tent of the United States, 1s-
The wheel M M, attached to the wagonwheel, in combination with the wheel N, the lever D, and bar E E, and the-crane P 0 O, when the same are constructed in the aforesaid combination and for the purposes set forth, in the manner described.
JAMES MADISON MILLER.
