LEWIS HOVER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 67,547, dated August 6, 1867.
IMPROVED BOAT-D ETAGHING TAGHIE.
fitlp .fittnhnle refsmt it it their 33mm fitted ant mating part at its time.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, LEWIS HOVER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Boat-Detaching Tackle; and do hereby declare that the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a. life-boat, which is hung by the side of a vessel by means of the links 13 B in the usual way, my invention not relating to the mode of hanging, but to the mode of attaching and detaching the heat A. Two cross-burs O C are provided, one at the bow and the other across the stern of the boat, each being hinged at one end. F F represent two rods, which are connected at one end to the outer ends of the bars O C. Ihe other ends of the rods F connect to a lever, G, one below and the other above its fulcrum. The lever is'pivotcd in a vertical position within the boat, and its upper end projects above the sides of the boat, so that it can be operated either by the foot or the hand. D D represent two bolts, which are placed longitudinally of the boat, and whichare supported'near each end by suitable hearings. The inner ends of these bolts are secured to the bars 0 0 about their centres. e e represent coiled wire springs, which surround the bolts, and which serve to press them outward, while the bars 0 O, rods F F, and lever G serve to draw them in the opposite direction. The links B B, when forced down through an opening in the deck of the boat made to receive them, over the outer ends of the bolts, force said bolts back. When the links have passed, the bolts springlforward and catch them and retain them, suspending the boat by the links The operator; either by hand or; foot, may release the links at the same instant by withdrawing the bolts by means of the lever G. The boat, afteror before being detached or attached, can be lowered or raised by the usual blocks and tackle.
Having thus fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The bolts D D, springs e 6, bars O C, rods F F, and lever G, arranged with the links'B B, for attaching or detaching the boat A, substantially as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of May, 1867.
