Letters Patent No. 65,825, dated JmzelS, 1867.

TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
I ie it known that I, MILTODIV. NOBLES, of Elmira, in the county of Gheinung, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in Boat-Connccting and Detaching Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the followingvto he afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specitication, in' whieh- Figure 1 representsa top plan of ahoat, with the connecting and detaching apparatus in place, `the hails being represented as dropped down on the decks.
Figure 2 represents a vertical cross-section through the boat, representing onegoi` the hails as raised up, and ready to receive the davit-block hook. l y
Similar letters of reference, where they occur in the separate figures, denote like parts of the apparatus in both.`
My invention relates more especially to such holding-heads as are jointed seras to drop down and lieupon the boat'when not in us, and thus he out of the'way. And my invention consists in raising up, locking, and unlocking the holding device, by the operation -of a single level', or of a. single shaft, thus simplifying and rendering more eflicient and expeditious the connecting and detaching apparatuskand putting the whole operatin in the hands of a single persen, so that no confusion or untimed action can be had by a multiplicity of orders, or division of the manipulations.
'To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention?, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings. y
A represents. the holding-heads, one at or near each endet' the boat. These heads pass through `the kcelson B, and through the decks C, andjust abolve the decks arejointedl, as at @the npperportions A', having the connecting and disconnecting apparatus combined with them, as will he explained, and also the bail or brace, by which the boat is preventedfrom tipping or rocking, as it isliable to do when hung by its' centre. Upon the upperportions ofthe heads A are arranged, first, a hinged arm, b, having a hole, c, in or through it, into which the point of the hook d takes and holds. The hooks cZ are hinged to the tops of the holding-heads, as at e, and are held over towards the hinged arm with whichit acts by a spring, f, which constantly tends to force it in that direction, though it yields when the hook is forcibly moved in an oppositedirection. A bail or brace, g, united at its crown to the head, and hinged at the sides of the boat, as at Zz, which hinges are in line with that in the head a, prevents the boat from rocking or tipping when suspended to the davit-blocks, and admits of its dropping with the head when the lat-ter is detached, a. rubber or other spr-ing,1.', tending to throw down said head and bail. Longitudinally of the boat, and low enough down not to be in the way, thereis arrangeda rocking-shafnzl), furnished with a lever, j, by which it may he operated. i On each end of the shaft D there is a wrist or crank, 7c, to which is connected a rod, Z, that passes through the deck, and on top of which the head A', when down, rests or lies, and to which crank or wrist is also connected a rod, m, extending up through the deck, and jointed as at a1., in line with the other joints a la Z1., so as to yield with them; and the extreme upper end of the rod m is linked, as at o, to the jointed arm b, Athese devices being duplicated at the ends, or at each of the holding-heads. y
A modification of `the herein-described plan may be made by placing the tackle-hook below, and allowing the balancing-rod or arm to pass through a guide on or near the tackle-block.
The operation is as follows: supposing the holding-heads to be lying down, as shown in iig. 1, the shaft D is turned,l and its cranks c raise up the rods Z against the heads A', and thus raise up the heads into a vertical or nearly so position. At the same movement of the cranks c the rods m are moved up, and they in turn raise the hinged arms b, and their holes or depressions, when thus raised up, receive the points of the hooks d, and. hold them rigidly. By reversing the motion of the shaft D, the arms b are drawn away from the hooks, and they are released, and swung open to let go the block-hook; at the same time the lifting-rods Z drop, and the springs t' throw down or ease down the heads as they followthe rods Z. 4
Having thus fully described myrinvention, what I claim'therein als new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with hinged and dropping holding-heads, the lifting and lowering-rods Z, and the locking and unlocking arms l, all operated by one lever, or vone shaft, so that the whole may be within the control of one person, substantially as and for the purpose described.
' M. V. NOBLES.
