Description

N-PETERS. FMQTKLLITHOGRAPNER. WASHINGTON D C @eine tats stmtt @ffice ANTOINE ST. LOUIS, OF KEESEVI'LLE, NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No. 66,906, dated July 16,1367. i
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, ANTOINE LOUIS, of Keeseville, in the county of Clinton, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Nail and Spike Machinesg and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A A represent the frame of the machine, which is made in a very firml and substantial manner, A representing the sides and A the ends of saidframe. Erected upon the sides A are two uprights, B B, which support a cam-shaft, B'. J and I represent shafts which run from end to end ofthe frame, and which are supported in proper bearings in said'ends; These shafts support the anvils. The vshaft I supports the hammers H'H, and shaft J supports the anvils K and L. These anvils have openings in their lower ends through which the shafts pass. Q'reprcsents a shaft situated at one side of the-frame and supported upon suitable uprigh'ts erected upon the endv pieces at-their ends. Upon this shaft Q is'secured a gear-wheel, R, three cam-wheels, l?, P, and S, and also a, wheel, y, which has lugs upon its periphery at suitable distances apart for the purpose of operating a lever which carries a knife for cutting otl' the nail. The two cam-wheels P P operate the levers O and M, which said levers operate respectively the anvils K and L, giving them a slightly oscillating movement to and from the hammers H H. 'The levers O and M have their ends which lie upon the cam-wheels P and P drawn down upon said wheels by means of suitable springs. Thelever X also has its outer end confined to the periphery of its wheel y by a spring so that it may be properly operated upon by the lugs onsaid wheel. The hammers'H H being confined securely to their shaft I have motion imparted tothemby means of a lever, Z, whose outer end connects to the lower end of abar, Z.` The upper end of bar Z is provided with an opening which surrounds an eccentric-wheel upon shaft BL. When the shaft B is rotated, the bar Z, through its lever Z', gives a slightly oscillating movement to the upper ends of the hammers H H', to and from the anvils K and L.- D represents a lever, which has one en d pivoted to a support which is erected upon one end of the frame, and its other end pivoted to the upper end of the hammer F. This lever has secured upon its under side a hammer, E. The hammer F is provided with an opening,.in which fits an eccentric-wheel upon shaft B. This eccentric-wheel causes the hammer to rise and fall, giving au oscillating motion to the lower end of the anvil, which said lower end is provided with a roller, G. Ou oneend of the shaft B is a wheel, '.l, which has a-thread formed upon its periphery, which said thread works between the teeth of the gear-wheel' R. Motion is imparted tol the hammers II H by the shaft'B when power is applied to revolve said shaft. V V represent two ways secured upon one side of the anvil L, which are provided with a. T-shaped groove, in which runs a similar-shaped slide, W'.v Secured to the slide W is a griper, lv. The inner end of said griper is pivted between 'two ears on the slide, and the outer end runs over one of the ways. The bar of iron of which .the nail is to be formed is placed upon the slide W,- beneath that end of the'griper which is confined between-the ears upon said slide. That way over which the outer end of the griper rests is slightly bevelled, so as to allow said outer end vto fall slightly while the inner end is raised to allow the bar of iron to be passed under it. When the slide moves inward, the griper, rising upon the bevelled way, clamps the bar tightly with its iunerend upon the slide, A lever, U, pivoted near one end to one of the side pieces of the frame, is operated upon at its outer end by means of the cam-wheel S. The other endof said lever is slotted, and through this slot is connected by'lneans of a pin tothe slide W. .A spring, d, draws this lever U against the cam-wheel S. The lever U .operating the sli'deW, serves to feed the bar of iron to the anvilsr In using this invention the bar of iron'is placed upon the slide W', beneath the inner end of the griper, and is caught'by. the said griper W and is fed upto the anvil by means of the spring d. The cams upon wheel S operate the lever U, causing it to draw the slide with its griper back after the said slide hasbeen moved forward so as to feed up the bar to the anvils by means of spring d. When the bar has been placed between the anvils and the hammers, they work upon it, drawing and shaping it properly.` The nail, after passing the hammers F and H and anvil L, passes to the anvil K and hammers -H and E, where it is pointed, planished, and'then cut o' by the knife or cutter a-on the lever X. As soon as the nail is cut of, the anvil K is moved back by the lever O so as to allow the nail to drop out of the way,'it falling downv between the anvil K and hammer H.
As fast es one nail is cut off another is brought up by the griper and undergoes the seme operation. Ledges are formed upon the anvils the size the nail is intended to be, and on which it lies, as seen at e, figs. 3 and 5.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isl 1. The arrangement of the moving anvils K and L, the side hammers H H', with the hammers E and F, the lutter beings` provided with a. roller-fece, es and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the slide W and griper W with the ways V V, lever U, and cam-wheel S, subsantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the knife or cutter awith the anvil K and hammers E :tud H, substantially as herein represented.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 4th day of February, 1867.
ANTOINE ST. LOUIS.
