IMPROVEMENT IN HINGES.
@lp dgrmle rcferrch t: in tigen ettirs utent :mh mating part nf its aan.
T0 WHQM IT vMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAY W. POWERS, of Evanston, in theV county of Cook, and State oflllinois, have'invented n new and useful Improvement in Hinges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exnct description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making e. part of this specification, in whoh- Figure I is n perspective view.
Figure t2 shows the parts or segments of which it is composed.
Figure 3, n transverse section of the hinge when in operation and Figure 1, the seme when closed. I l
A B and C represent; the three pnrt-s of a triplicatehinge, united at a and a" .by the pins (Z and nl', inserted 'into their appropriate thimbles, in the usuel mannen-of joining butt-hinges. A and C aro perforated with holes Z Z Z Z, Z Z Z Z, for screws to secure the hinge in itsnpplicntion -in use, A being joined to B at a, and B to G 'nt a", so that when closed the part B is folded betw-erm the others'. The part A is provided with n, fossn or depression, c, and at the sides of this fossa. thimbles b b, through which a pin is inserted. The p'zlnt B has a. slot 'o1"sinns, and thimbles e e also for a. pin.l The part Chase. slot, h. lD is n. com for regulating the movements :of the other` parts; .it consists of a. body, n, and aI head, o; m is n pin projecting from the sides of the body n,
at 'its end; is a. slot in the head o, having a. curved or parabolic form k is a round hole. Uniting these parts os shown in fig. 3, the cam l) is passed through the slotf, and secured to the part B by the pin passing through thimbles e-e and the hole k, While the slot z' receives the pin passed through the thimbles b b on the 4part A, the head resting in the fossa c, the small end of the body 'n being passed through the slot k on the part C, the pin m holding it 4in its place, and, es the hinge is opened nnd'shut, sliding bhind, or'n a. groove on the part C. When the hinge is shut, the parts rest in the position shown in-fig. 4.
` It will readily b e perceived that the operation of the com is such thntvvhen the hinge is opened atthe joint a', the head of the cam sliding in the fossa. c, forces the part B away frorh the part-A, allowing the door E to swing clenr from its post, frame, or casing, F, the corner, taking the direction shown by the dottedlinespp, ns
shown in iig. I; and on closing it the pin passes through the thimbles b b, and the slot z' forces the parts A and `:B together, soy that When-applied to ny door or other thing to which it may be applicable, it isnot necessary that :the hinge come to the surface at either side, but may be placed at e distance therefrom, within the wood or other material of which the door or its frame is made, and' hence when the door is closed be entirely concealed or invisible. i
I do not claim the invention of the triplicate hinge, for that may have been mede before; but whatI claim -ns my invention, and' desire to secure by/'Letters Patent, is- 4 The com D, applied to a triplicate binge, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
' JAY W. POWERS.
