JACOB H; SHEAR, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 62,695,1111ttd March 5, 18b7.
ASH AND SIPTING PAN FOR COOKING STOVES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JACOB H. SHEAR, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking Stoves, which may also be applied to heating stoves and ranges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The drawing represents a vertical longitudinal section of a cooking stove embracing my invention.
A is the fire-chamber, and A the fire-grate. B is a pan which receives all the ashes, coals, and cinders falling through the fire-grate, and B is a sliding grated bottom to said pan, which may be vibrated by sliding it back and forward, independently of the pan of which it forms the bottom, or it maybe 'so constructed and arranged as to oscillate independently of the pan. F is a vacant space back of said receiving pan, to allow its sliding grated bottom room to vibrate, and a is an opening in the front plate of the box, into which said receiving pan sits, to allow a proper instrument to be inserted to vibrate or oscillate the grated bottom B. C is the lower ash-pan, which receives the sifted ashes, after passing through the grated bottom of pan B, and H His the box in the hearth into which .both of said pans sit. E is an inclined plate which conducts all the ashes, coals, and cinders falling through the fire-grateinto the receiving pan B, and D is a movable cover, which when in place prevents any ashes or dust from escaping into the room. The ash-pans B and C are both provided with bails, shown in cross-section at b and b, by which they can be lifted out of their seats, and replaced therein at pleasure. The upper or receiving ash-pan B has its upper edge, on the side next to the inclined plate E, closely fitted to said inclined plate by a lap-joint, shown at c, and the other three sides of the box H, in which it sits, being all inclined inward like a hopper, and the corresponding sides of said pan inclining inward still more than the sides of the box, the rim of the pan fits into the box so as to make a perfectly tightjoint. The ash-pan C is of the same form as the lower part of the box H in which it sits. The cover D fits closely to the hearth, all round the three sides of the box H, above mentioned, and to the front plate K, of the stove, above the opening 0, through which the ashes, cinders, 350., descend to the receiving ash-pan B, so that no ashes or dust can rise from said pan and escape into the room even when the grate is agitated.
I am aware that two sliding ash-pans, one above the other, have been located similarly to mine, the upper ash-pan having a grated bottom, but in no instance of which I am aware have two ash-pans ever been so placed, one above the other the upper one having a vibrating or oscillating grated bottom, and so constructed and arranged that both could be lifted out of their box seat by means of bails, and replaced by the same means.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The sloping plate under the fire-chamber, in combination with a closely fitted lifting receiver, having an independently vibrating or oscillating grated bot-tom for sifting the ashes, substantially in the manner and for the purposes above described. 7
2. I claim the detachable lifting receiver, with a vibrating or oscillating grated bottom fitting closely to the hearth, and to the sloping plate under the fire-chamber, for the purposes within described, in combination with the lifting ash-pan underneath, to receive the ashes during the sifting of the same.
3. I claini the detachable lifting receiver, with the vibrating or oscillating grated bottom, in combination with the lifting ash-pan underneath, and the.vacant space or chamber F, between the receiver and the front of the oven, to give the grate room to vibrate outside of the receiver, substantially as shown and described.
4. I claim the detachable lifting receiver, having a vibrating or oscillating grated bottom, constructed in the manner substantially as and for the purpose above described. JACOB H. SHEAR.
