Description
A. C. WILLIAMS.
Cooking Stove.
Patented Dec. 5, 1865.
W W. M
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. C. WVILLIAMS, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JACOB H. SHEAR AND JOSEPH PACKARD, OF THE SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,406, dated December 5, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. CALDWELL WIL- LIAMS, of the city of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in the Apparatus of Cooking-Stoves; and I declare the following specification, with the drawings forming part of the same, to be a full and perfect description of my invention.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the front part of the stove in perspective, with the end door and part of the near side plate removed. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional diagrams of the portable ash-pan and ash-sitter and the box-seat of the ash-pan.
Similar letters denote the same parts in all the figures.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use myinvention, I willproceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A is the body of the stove; B, the firechamber; C, the grate; D, the inclined plate under the fire to convey the ashes down to the ash-pan.
E E is the box-seat, into which the portable ash-pan fits, and E is the front wall of the oven or of the flue which surrounds it, according to the construction of the stove to which my invention may be applied.
F is avacant space between the ash'pan and the oven, forming a hot-air chamber, as hereinafter more particularly described.
H is the portable ash-pan, which is fitted closely within its box-seat at its front and side edges, and at its back edge is carefully fitted to the front edge of the plate D, making a smooth joint on the upper surface by means of a rabbet in the lower edge of said plate, as shown at a, which rabbet may be formed by a simple corrugation in the edge of the plate, as shown at b, Fig. 2.
J is a movable grate or sitter fitted into the ash-pan, and is provided with a narrow rim, S, rising around and above its edges, and fitting the sides and ends of the pan.
The asltpan is provided with a'bail, h, by means of which it may be lifted from its seat and carried to the place of emptying the ashes without the slightest liability to spill any of its contents on the floor, and by the same means may be replaced in its seat as conveniently as it could be set down upon the fioor.
The box-seat for the ash-pan being perfectly tight in its bottom and sides, and the upper rim of the ash-pan fitting closely to the sides and ends of said box-seat, and to the lower edge of saidinclined plateD, the vacant space F becomes atight chamber, which will be filled with confined hot air when the ash-pan is in place, and which will protect the front of the oven or of the hot-air flue around it, as the case may be, from the cooling effect which would be produced by such an exposure to the cold air as would necessarily result from the use of a sliding ash-pan as commonly constructed and arranged.
What I claim as, my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The portable ash-pan with sifter and bail, in combination with the box-seat, into which it closely fits, and the inclined plate D, substantially as shown and described.
2. The hot-air chamber F, between the ashpan and the front of the oven or its surrounding flue, formed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
A. C. WILLIAMS.
