Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MELLEN BRAY, OF NEWTON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM lWOOD- BURY, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED GUIDE FOR BOOM-JAWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,001, dated May 22, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELLEN BRAY, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Guide for the Jaws of Booms of Vessels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in Which- Figure l represents the deck of a vessel with a mast and boom, the latter having my improved guide applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the under side ofthe boom.
My invention relates to certain improvements in booms of vessels; and it consists in providing each of the jaws ofthe boom with a guide-piece, which projects down over the saddle and prevents the corners or edges of the jaws from coming into contact with and wearing awayT the mast-an event of frequent occurrence where the boom is applied in the usual manner. l
To enable others skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A represents the deck of a Vessel 5 B, the mast; and C, the boom, the jaws a of which rest on the saddle D in the usual manner.
To each of the jaws a is secured a strip of metal, b, which is bent over and is of such a length as to project down outside the saddle, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, so that when the boom swings or plays from side to side the Aguide-pieces b bear against the outside of the saddle and prevent the corners or inner edges of the jaws a from rubbing against and Wearing away the mast, as is the case where the boom is applied in the usual manner and its jaws allowed to come into contact therewith.
The above-described device is simple and effectual, and may be applied to booms of vessels now in use at a very tritling cost.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The guide-pieces b, in combination with the boom C and saddle D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
