Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
E. E. DART, oE WESTEIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED VISE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,094, dated August 1, 1865.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. B. DART, of Westfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Vise; and I do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section ot' my invention, taken in ihe line .fr x, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section ot the same, taken in the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in combining with an ordinary vise having parallel jawsfor grasp-- ing plane surfaces a pair of jaws having, faces provided with V-shaped recesses or notches to grasp cylindrical articles-such as tubing, rods, Src-by which twoimplements are combined in one, and the value of' the ordinary vise greatly augmented.
- A B represent the two jaws of an ordinary bench-vise, C being the guide of the movable or sliding jaw B, and D the screw by which said jaw is moved. These parts are of the usual construction, and therefore do not require a minute description.
E represents one ofthe supplemental or addition aljaws referred to in the pi eainble. This jaw is composed of a metal plate, steel being preferable, and having its face formed otl two oblique parts by cutting a V-shaped recess in the end ot' thel plate. This plate is placed edgewise on the guide C and has its outer end secured to the lStock or standard ot' the movable jaw B. The other supplemental or additional jaw, F, is composed ot' two plates, a a, which are constructed precisely like the jaw E, and are secured to the stock or standard of the tixed jaw A at such a distance apart as to allow the jaw E to pass between them, and thereby not interfere with the proper movement ot' the jaw B or prevent the latter being closed or brought in contact with jaw A. Y
Thejaws E F are designed i'or grasping and holding cylindrical articles, and they' will be a great acquisition to the ordinary bench-vise, while they will not appreciably augment the cost of the constructlon ot' the same.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a vise provided with the usual parallel jaws and with the oblique-faced or V-recessedjaws, coinbined and arranged substantially as set forth.
H. B. DART.
