Description
J.- H. PORTER, Foot Rest for 'Blacking Boxes.
Patented Oct. 11, 1864.
Wv'lw @5 5 N. PETERS, Phala-Lilhngraphen Washington, (1C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. PORTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
l MPRO\ /ED FOOT-REST FOR BLACKlNG-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44,656, dated October 11, 1864.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. PORTER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Foot-Rest and Box for Blacking Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of my invention, taken in the line 90 00, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in combining a convenient and portable receptacle for a blacking-box and brush with a foot-rest, on which the boot or shoe is blacked and polished, all
' being arranged in such a manner as to afford a very desirable article for private useonc by which boots and shoes may be blacked by the wearer while on his feet with the greatest facility.
A represents a box, which may be of rectangular form and supported by feet a, said box being of sufficient dimensions to receive a blacking-box, necessary brushes, &c. This box A has a socket, b, at the center of its lid c to receive the lower end of a spiral spring, B, the upper end of which is titted in a similar socket, d, to which a foot-rest, O, is attached. This spring B serves as a universaljoint, and admits of the foot being turned in any direction, in order that all parts of the boot or shoe may be properly acted upon by the brush.
The box and foot-rest may be constructed of wood, the spring B of course being of metal. The box is provided with a bail or handle, D, for the convenience of carrying the device about.
This simple device will prove to be a great convenience and a very desirable article for private use. A proper receptacle is obtained for the blacking and brushes, where they always can be found, and by having the footrest 0 on the box, chairs and other articles of furniture, which are now frequently soiled by having the boot or shoe resting upon them while being blacked, will not be injured from that cause. By having the foot-rest attached to the box through the medium of the spiral spring B the foot may be turned in any direction, so that the brush may act upon all parts of the boot or shoe.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the box A with the footrest 0, when the latter is attached to the former by means of a spring, B, to admit of the adjustment of the boot or shoe, while on the foot of the wearer, to the brush, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN H. PORTER.
Witnesses WM. F. M CNAMARA, THEO. TUsoH.
