IMPRGVED FOOT-REST.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,63, dated .Tuly ll, reni.

' To all whom it 'may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. ADAMS, of Hillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Crickets or Foot-Rests; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of my invention, a piece being broken away to show the means I employ for adjusting the center portion of the cricket or foot-rest. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section ofthe same, taken in the line ma', Fig. 1.

It is very often found desirable, when warming the feet at a stove or before a re,to vary their height so as to take advantage ot' any degree ot' heat that it lmight seem would be given by changing their position vertically, and it is often found tedious, especially to ladies sewing, or while sitting for a long time engaged at any one particular thing, to keep the feet always in the saine position, when but a slight change in the height of the article upon which they rest would at once relieve all the muscles that have been constrained and place the sitter more at ease; and a handy and quickly-adjusted'foot-rest for the use ot' gentlemen while smoking or reading is also desirable, as it would, iu` a great degree, leave no excuse for that impolite habit of throwing the feet upon another chair or upon a table or other like article.

By this invention I provide a foot-rest the height of which may be quickly and easily regulated to suit the pleasure of the sitter; -and to accomplish this I construct a cricket in such a manner that its top, or a portion thereof, maybe raised and lowered and heldin position substantially as hereinafter described.

To enable others to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.

A represents the box or body ofthe cricket, which may be constructed in the usual or any suitable manner and have much the appearance of au ottoman.

The top of this cricket is made in three parts or sections, B B and C, and all these parts may be covered with plush or any other suitable fabric. The parts or sections B B are firmly attached to the box A or body of the cricket. llhe'part or section C is made separate from the others, and it has attached at or near each of its ends a slide or standard,a,whichls arranged to slidein grooved guides, arranged in side of the box A., at each end thereof.

These knobs not onlyserve to release the springcatches, but they alsoserve as handles by which 'to lift or carry the cricket, and they may be made quite ornamental, if desired.

E represents a spring applied to the under side of the section U, for the purpose of throwing up the said section after the same has been forced down even with the permanent sections or part-s B B so soon as the pressure' of the spring-catches d is withdrawn from the mortisesff, cut in the slidesl or standards a, for theespecialpurpose ofenabling the said springcatches to hold the section C after it has been thrown down even with the otherparts or sections of the cricket.

The interior of the box A or body 0f the cricket offers a convenient receptacle for a la dys sewing-work or gentlemans slippers and boot-jack, and for many other articles which it is desirable always to keep in a handy place.

The cricket, when not in use as afoot-rest, presents lthe appearance of an ordinary seat or ottoman, and is a very neat and pret-ty ar1 ticle of furniture. When it is designed to use it as a foot-rest it is only necessary to d raw outward the knobs or handles D, when the spring 15'. instantly throws the part or section@ up far enough *o afford an easy hold with the hand, when it can be raised the height of one, two, three, or more notches in the siides or standarde a, according to the hei gilt desired.
