Hole 14

Long, 618 yards, par five

A brilliant par five, there's no other way to describe.

The extra 37 yards that have been added make it the longest hole in Open history and one of longest in any major championship.

The extra length will rejuvenate the hole which had become slightly obsolete with how far the top players were hitting the ball.

It's a frightening tee shot if the breeze is in your face. There's out-of-bounds all the way down the right and the Beardies bunkers lurk left.

The second shot throws up several choices but if you can clear the big Hell bunker it gives you a chance to run it up to the green.

The final approach to a rampart-fronted green is an awkward pitch with so many different ways to play it, wind and nerves depending.

The extra yardage will make the 14th one of the most dangerous holes in this year's Open championship, and there 'll be plenty of sporting things happening here - some cruel, some kind.

You can make eagles but you can also run up a seven or eight without any trouble.

Long: The name is self-explanatory.

The Beardies bunkers: Four tiny pot bunkers at about 250 yards around which the grass is difficult to mow, hence the name.

Hell bunker: The name speaks for itself. It can be up to 10 feet deep and in 1995 Jack Nicklaus took three to escape, costing him a 10.
