The room was clean and comfortable. Close to train station but not seedy or too touristy? 20-30 minutes to museums and Anne Frank house. Breakfast was delicious. Enjoyed free drink and use of umbrellas. The staff was friendly but couldn’t answer all of our questions.

It was the worst experience ever the hotel wasn’t professional at all. They invaded my privacy and they open the room while I was taking a shower and they were pushing the doors and when I asked them, why were do they were doing this? They said it’s our right to open the room if you didn’t answer the phone however I told them I’m taking a shower and then I’m coming to extend they didn’t care they were so rude and unprofessional terrible! That was the worst experience ever. I’m never coming back to this hotel and the location is the worst. It’s literally far from everything you’re in the middle of nowhere.

We didn't bother with the 'Amsterdam Card' (which gives free admission to many attractions and free public transport) but the City Card which gives access to free public transport (metro, tram, rail, ferry) was well worth it. We didn't do much structured sightseeing but instead enjoyed just exploring on foot, helped by the excellent public transport system. It's a city everyone should visit at least once, even though crowded at times.

If you are passing through Schiphol, it's usually good. They have a speed track for those making connections with a short layover at passport control. However, in the summer, they get lots of thunderstorms, and so flights don't often arrive on time. If you get stuck there, the Dutch are not particularly warm or helpful, so expect a calloused response to any requests for help, particularly from KLM and the border agents at passport control who seem suspicious about why you are in Amsterdam in the first place.

The airport is very easy to navigate, staff are friendly and most speak English as well as Dutch. The train, which is in the same area as the airport, requires a credit card for each passenger but is very easy to tap on and off. If you are looking for a good flat white (if you know, you know), look carefully before you order - most places use automatic machines and the coffee is ordinary. Look for an espresso machine.

Reasonable cost for parking (anywhere in Europe frankly) is my motivation to look outside of centre of city areas and then use local transport or walk. Parking costs at hotels in our budget in Amsterdam city were very high - secure convenient Q-park station in Amsterveen was E18 per day compared to E40-50 a day at hotels closer to the centre.

It is a small city, very clean, neat and attractive with interesting streets and canals. It has a very old large church with a magnificent organ in which cultural events are held regularly. There is a also a Stedelijk museum, worth a visit. It takes only 35 mins by train to reach Amsterdam. Fabulous countryside for cycling. Beach and North Sea close by.

The city has great sights and is a real gem for historical reasons. The Ann Frank house, Rembrandt and Van Gogh museums/houses are fantastic. The prices can be bit high, but that's Europe on the US dollar right now, so it was expected. This is my 3rd time there and every time I find new and interesting things to see and experience. Its a must see for a bucket list!
