Kumamoto city - not much to see.
Kumamoto city - not much to see. Aso area - nicer - with views, countryside and waterfalls. Accessible only by car so suggest self drive. Treat places like US where you need to drive everywhere to get stuffs. I don't put photos because need to convert to jpg.Guest review byArundataTaiwan - 10.0

The visit to Mount Aso and walking there is a great experience and the bus from Aso railway station up to the volcano makes the visit easy. A bit too many people at the crater but fortunately less on th longer hike.Guest review byVladimírCzech Republic - 8.0

Getting around is easiest with a car, but note that it's a small mountain town so roads can be narrow--a smaller rental car would be a good choice for visiting tourists. There's not a lot of convenience shops but local produce is glorious and cheap. You can do many hiking/walking daytrips based here into the Kuju mountains and Aso area. We visited in spring, so roads were clear but I'm not sure how conditions would be in winter.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

The owners were exceptionally lovely, I arrived when it was a bit dark, but she quickly responded to my message about my arrival and helped me get to the property. Also their generosity and kindness were amazing despite me being a little lost in my Japanese understanding. Stay was comfortable with a great view of the mountains greeting you as you woke up. I would definitely recommend staying here, probably arriving a little before the sun sets as the small streets can be a little confusing if you take the wrong route.Guest review byAndrewAustralia - 10.0
Amakusa is an amazing place with amazingly friendly locals.
Amakusa is an amazing place with amazingly friendly locals. Never crowded with tourists, peaceful, and relaxing. Lots to do and see as this island has beautiful mountains and beaches. The dolphin watch is an experience like no other dolphin encounter. The drive through the mountain roads offers spectacular views of peeks covered in lush forests. Amakusa is a must for anyone visiting Japan!Guest review byDanielUnited States - 6.0

Other than the castle area, there isn't much to see in Kumamoto itself. But if you enjoy nature, the city is a pretty good jumping off point for visiting areas such as the Aso caldera and the Takachiho Gorge area.Guest review byTomJapan - 10.0
Great views. Great trip.
Great views. Great trip. Only disappointment is the blue "lake" in Nakadake Crater. All the pictures show the "lake" while to my understanding it was destroyed during the 2016 earthquake. It was what drawn my attention to this location to begin with, so it was disappointing not seeing it. All these pictures should be replaced with what currently is there, not what used to be there.Guest review byAnonymousUnited States - 10.0

This small town was very tranquil and relaxing with many hot spring baths available to experience and enjoy. Easy to walk around and visit the many small shops in the town. The Okyakuya Inn, which I stayed at, was perfect with a traditional tatami room and futons and both dinner and breakfast course meals were delicious serving dishes made with local ingredients. The staff were also great and friendly.Guest review byTomokoCanada - 10.0

people unfriendly, better in other cities (and I have traveled to japan over 25 years plus lived in Osaka). Finding the bus station and getting bus info was a pain... the bus office is in the mall upstairs and the mall entrance has NO indication that it continues the bus office...we walked around for ages to locate it .Guest review byRussVietnam
