Next time I’d spent 4 days and rent a car to explore the o it skirts of the city. Getting around the city is super easy by walking or local transportation. I’d also eat more ice cream there…such different flavors compared to everywhere else. We loved Asahikawa, a very fun little city with a huge variety of bars and restaurants, easy access to local ski resorts, lots to see and do, and just a really fun, friendly vibe. Was a nice change after the hectic pace of Niseko. We will return next year and give ourselves a bit more time to have a really good look around (could do with 7 nights - our stay was 4 nights). Enjoyed the bonus of the winter festival being on during our stay, with spectacular ice sculptures the whole length of the main street, plus a big festival zone with activities, a huge ice stage, and dozens of food vans. We've been twice to Furano. It's a wonderfully friendly and relaxed resort. While it's not large by European or American standards, it features fabulously dry powder snow, and great restaurant options at the foot of the slopes and in the adjacent town. Kushiro is a compact city.
Kushiro is a compact city. When I was there in February 2024 the city was fairly quiet. Kushiro is a good place to stay if you are interested in seeing the Red crowned-cranes (Tancho). The Akan International Crane Center is just over an hour away by public bus. It's also possible to travel to the wetlands and the many lakes in the area. The Kushiro City Museum is very good with displays of the natural history, geology and Tancho. Very beautiful and quaint little town. Loved the hot foot and hand spas for the public. Views of the lake were amazing and the onsen with the cost of our room was worth it. This city is 'just right.'
This city is 'just right.' We loved Tokyo, but it was a little too big. Sapporo was just about the right size to provide everything we needed, but not make us feel like we were being 'swallowed up' by it's size. Odori park was beautiful, the food options were endless, there were plenty of places to explore, and as an added bonus, the Soren festival was taking place, which added to the excitement of the city. Suskino had the night life we enjoyed without being a little 'too much' like Shinjuku in Tokyo. (I'm not down on Tokyo, we loved that, but there was something about Sapporo that we just loved. We are already talking about going back for the Winter Festival sometime in the future.Guest review byScott
