FAQs about hotels in Lake District
Poetic Artistry at its Best
The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.
A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.
In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

This hotel had obviously seen better days.
This hotel had obviously seen better days. Its main benefits is that it is central to the town. Some of the staff were friendly but others, while not unfriendly, seemed somewhat indifferent to guests. The hotel did not provide dinner so guests were requested to use a bistro by the side of the hotel, and part of it, where both the ambience and the food were not very appealing. Windermere is a pleasant enough town but does not have any particularly attractive features. Bowness has more, and is on the lakeside, one mile away.Guest review byJames WhiteUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Bowness is a lovely place with loads of small shops, eateries and bars, and of course, the lakeside activities. We stayed overnight and had a great afternoon and evening. The biggest negative is the parking situation as there are way too many vehicles for the available parking facilities - patience is certainly needed.Guest review byMrkWrdnUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Keswick is a beautiful part of England.
Keswick is a beautiful part of England. Would love to have been able to stay longer and experience all it has to offer. Would climb more fells and see more of the countryside. Loved every part of our trip. We especially enjoyed boat rides on the lake and our hike up to Latrigg summit. Traveling around by bus was vey easy, and would highly recommend it.Guest review byJanetUnited States - 10.0

A beautiful, well kept area of the lakes with plenty of shops and eateries. Great location for walkers to explore from and relax in the evenings…. Can get very busy in summer months but never disappoints no matter what time of year. Hope the area never changes and remains as picturesque for years to come and not ruined by ugly out of character buildings in the future. We need to preserve this iconic and picturesque area of our country for years to comeGuest review byCarlUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We returned to this hotel as we loved it when the children were young, but now our children are growing teenagers, the room was too small and too hot. There was no air conditioning in the room and for the price, there really should have been. The food was lovely and the staff pleasant, however the swimming times were restrictive for children. We visited Long Meg and her daughters, which was lovely and the car parking was free. If it's a nice day, take a picnic. You can also pick raspberries when there too.Guest review byTraceyUnited Kingdom - 6.0

The location was quiet as it was hidden behind other buildings. There were two rooms per floor and three floors. The stairs were winding and narrow so not appropriate for seniors unless in good physical condition. I am over 75 and the stairs made me quite nervous. The kitchen was well equipped except I prefer perk or drip coffee. Folks from out of the UK may not understand the term 'cottage' as this is a three story building.Guest review byTeresa RCanada - 10.0

Grasmere is a charming village with plenty of cafe's, restaurants as well as a nice supply of shops especially outdoor wear. There are some stunning local walks around Grasmere and we recommend the hike up Easedale Tarn and the Waterfall at Sour Milk Gill. Grasmere is nestled between the mountains and is so pretty; the scenery is beautiful and the village is quaint.Guest review byFindlay - 8.0
