Google Goes Back2School Series: Networking...the Professional Kind
October 29, 2013
When you hear the word “networking”, what do you think of? The social kind? The hardware kind involving fiber-optic cables and signals? Or the really intimidating kind with company representatives and recruiters at career fairs and campus events?
If the latter rings true for you, then read on as we take on professional networking and provide strategies to help you achieve notable networking ninja status! Approaching representatives at career fairs and campus events may be one of the most intimidating things you do in college, but we want to change that reality and make professional networking as effective as the hardware version and as rewarding as the social version.

Mythbusters
Myth #1:
Campus recruiters and representatives speak with so many students at a time - they will never remember me!
Reality:
Not necessarily true. Come prepared with your resume and a unique, interesting fact about yourself. Our Google campus recruiters believe that students stand out when they are humble, inquisitive and passionate.
Myth #2:
I feel like I don’t have anything particularly unique or interesting to discuss.
Reality:
Come prepared with questions about our opportunities and company culture and let us know why you're interested in Google! Look up internships, programs our development opportunities you think are interesting before you meet with anyone.
Myth #3:
Networking is only effective in person.
Reality:
Definitely not! While campus recruiters do like to engage 1-on-1 and encourage you to introduce yourself when you have the chance, there are many other ways to stay connected. Keep in touch via email, ask to have a Hangout and/or meet on-campus.
Get started - attend career events on campus, join campus organizations and start making some lasting connections!

Google Goes Back2School Series: Review that Technical Resume!
October 9, 2013
Hours of revision, finding the right “action words”, reducing margins by another millimeter, and trying just one more font style...so goes those resume woes. If this sounds like you - we’re here to help!
Google Goes Back2School: Review that Resume!
to the rescue with expert advice on how to make yourself look as awesome on paper as you are in real-life. Since resumes provide most initial impressions, it is essential to ensure the paper (or pdf file) version of yourself is clearly organized, well-written and error-free.
Such an important matter requires professional assistance, so remember to listen to tips from our Google recruiting team via our G+ Hangout on Air on resume tips and tricks!
Now let’s tackle those pesky myths and set the record straight with
Mythbusters
!
Myth #1
: You must write a cover letter.
Reality
: Most companies require a cover letter; Google does not! You only need a cover letter if you are applying to Google’s
Information Technology Residency Program
.
Myth #2
: My resume needs to be one page. I should spend hours playing with the margins, shrinking the font size and making the bullet points smaller so it can all fit.
Reality
: We encourage you to keep your resume to one page, but understand the need to expand, especially if you're pursuing a graduate degree, have published papers or have a significant amount of work experience to highlight.
Myth #3
: I'm not applying to Google; I go to [XYZ small school] and Google does not hire from there.
Reality
: False! Google looks at every application that we receive, and each one is screened by a human (not a robot). There is not a hard and fast GPA cut-off, and we screen, interview and hire students from universities large and small, far and wide. If you are passionate about computer science, software engineering, and doing cool things that matter please submit your application for an internship or full-time role today!
Myth #4
: My GPA isn't perfect. Why bother applying when I know Google won't hire me?
Reality
: We understand that you are more than your GPA. When reviewing job applications Google looks at the entire package. Of course we value academic achievement, but you won't be instantly disregarded if your GPA is not stellar. We understand that every student has a different situation, and that different courses vary in their level of difficulty. We also value demonstrated passion for CS, so make sure your side projects are on your resume! This will help us look at the whole picture of everything you have accomplished, and help us evaluate your fit at Google to the best of our ability.
Now, time to get started!

Google Students Goes Back2School Series: Tech Students Going Beyond the Classroom
September 17, 2013
It’s that time again! Pack up the swimsuits and put on the backpacks - back to school we go!
We had a packed, productive summer and and hope you did too (whether that means interning, summer courses or Netflix marathons). We know that starting a new semester is refreshingly exciting for some and not so much for others, so we’re stepping in to help make that process easier in our Back2School series for technical students!
Over the next few weeks, we’ll feature topics to help you navigate your college journey and prepare you to take the next steps into a career (or discover it for the first time). We’ll also include a Mythbusters segment in each post to tackle the most common misconceptions and set the record straight for our students!
Going Beyond the Classroom
While most of the teaching happens in the classroom, lots of learning happens outside the classroom walls. Pursue your passions and go beyond the classroom by getting involved in STEM organizations, working on personal projects, attending hackathons, participating in code jams and just doing things you truly love (sports, music, bands, etc.). Team-oriented projects are especially helpful in building leadership and collaboration skills, which prove to be essential in the workplace.
Google’s Tech University Programs team takes on the myths many students have about getting involved outside of the classroom!
Mythbusters
Myth #1:
My campus/community doesn't have any CS related clubs, so there's nothing I can do.
Reality:
False! Why not consider starting your own club if there isn't one already on your campus? Many national groups, such as ACM, IEEE and others have resources to help you start a local chapter on your campus.
Myth #2:
The more clubs I join, the better.
Reality:
It's great to get involved in a variety of clubs and areas of interest, but it’s also important to detail your leadership experience, the impact you have had on the organization, or creative approaches to solving problems. Did you boost marketing efforts and double the size of active members in the club? Did you start a new program or activity for your organization? Did you think of unique ways to partner with your faculty, community, and other clubs? List it on your resume!
Myth #3:
I can't be involved in any extracurriculars that aren't about engineering, and I certainly can't list anything else on my resume.
Reality:
Showing you have a well-rounded set of interests is important, especially if you took a leadership role or did work in the community. Also you never know what your interviewer's interests are--you might bond over your participation in orchestra, chess, or the swing dance club!
