Abstract
Dental matrix tape and matrix system are equipment used to create a suitable proximal contact in dental restorations. Many dental matrix systems have been developed to date. All of them have advantages and disadvantages. In general, they have very large carriers for children and they are difficult to administer from the physician's point of view. There is no dental matrix system specially produced for children. The matrix system, which can be applied to two teeth at the same time, consists of anatomically shaped matrix bands (1) and compression helices (3). In the Mergen matrix system, the combination of anatomically shaped matrix bands (1), stabilizing and supporting clamping helices (3) makes this system easy to use. This matrix system can be easily placed in the area to be restored with the clamping surfaces (4) by hand or by using an oral spatula, one of the instruments routinely used by dentists, in one piece. This invention made possible a one-piece matrix system, eliminating the need for the use of retaining rings or forceps. It also makes it possible to restore two teeth at once.
Description
MERGEN MATRIX SYSTEM
• Technical Area
This invention relates to the dental matrix tape and matrix system, which are equipment used for filling teeth in the field of dentistry.
• State of the Technique
Dental matrix tape and matrix system are equipment used to create a suitable proximal contact in dental restorations. When the cavities prepared according to the area of caries are class II, III, IV or in diastema closure applications in caries-free areas, there are transparent or metal matrix systems that can be used to give the appropriate tooth form and to keep liquids such as blood and saliva that will adversely affect the restoration quality from the application area. In this way, more comfortable, functional and longer-lasting treatments can be performed in a shorter time. Many matrix systems have been developed as they are indispensable equipment in dental practice. However, the matrix systems that are valid and available in every dental restoration clinic today are limited. These can be listed as follows:
1- Tofflemire Matrix System (US2439703A): It is also called the 'Universal Matrix System' as it bears the name of the inventor of the system found in 1946. It is a system consisting of a metal strip matrix band and a matrix carrier. There are two screws in the carriage. By making both screws contactless, the tape is placed folded in half. When placed, it is fixed by tightening the tape with the screw at the bottom. Adjusting the formed ring according to the tooth size is done with the other screw. The carriage has two notches. The appropriate notch can be selected according to the position of the tooth to be restored. Except that the main production purpose is to attach the band in a linear way and to have the matrix carrier on the palatine. Although classically a flat matrix band is used, nowadays it can also be used with bands (US3842505A) in an anatomical form that first widens and then narrows again from the occlusal/incisal to the cervical of the pre-shaped tooth. One of the biggest advantages of the carrier is that it is stable and applicable not only for bifacial but also for trihedral cavities. It envelops the tooth quite well and supports the rolled cottons. It can also be used with rubber dam. The two teeth must be well separated from each other, otherwise it will not be possible to place them or the contact of the two teeth will not be within the appropriate limits. Although it is widely used in pediatric dentistry, it has disadvantages such as being used only in single tooth restoration and disturbing the lip for small mouths.
2- Crab Matrix System (US424790A): The system, which was introduced into dental practice in 1890, consists of a carrier and a metal matrix band. This system offers different band options. Bands can be selected according to the mesiodistal width and occlusogingival height of the tooth. The two protrusions on the matrix carrier enter the holes in the band and the band is tightened with the screw on the carrier and fixed to the tooth. The carriage has two fully recessed and fully protruding surfaces. The recessed surface is mounted in contact with the tooth. This matrix carrier is quite large and unstable. It is affected by tongue, cheek and lip movements and its stability is impaired. It can be used for only one tooth. It is not particularly useful in pediatric dentistry.
3- Celluloid tape: It is a transparent matrix strip tape used only if composite filling will be applied to the anterior teeth. It has no carrier.
• Purpose of the Invention
Existing matrix systems have advantages and disadvantages. In general, the application difficulties are both the inability to provide patient comfort due to the large size of the
carriers and the restriction of the physician's vision. Especially for children, carriers are scary. There is no specific system for children. Caries is a contagious disease and adjacent teeth decay together due to the morphological features of primary teeth. In pediatric dentistry, there is a need for a system that does not have a carrier and can be applied to neighboring teeth at once. With this system, there is no need for additional equipment such as carrier, forceps and can be applied to both teeth at the same time. Thus, comfort is increased, costs are reduced and restorations can be made faster. Speed is very important in pediatric dentistry.
• Description of the Invention
The matrix system (Mergen Matrix System), which can be applied to two teeth simultaneously, consists of anatomically shaped matrix bands (1) and compression helices (3). Anatomically shaped matrix bands (1) are in a concave structure suitable for the general anatomy of this region, narrowing towards the cervical in order to increase compliance with the lateral surfaces of the posterior teeth. Anatomically shaped matrix bands (1) are connected to each other by the joint (2). The junction (2) is located on the occlusal/incisal 1/3 of the surface. After the junction, the anatomically shaped matrix bands (1) separate towards the cervical and completely enclose the two teeth. Compression helices (3) are located in the buccal part of the tooth in order not to disturb the contact of the restoration to be made with the lateral teeth. Compression helices (3) can grasp the tooth and anatomically shaped matrix bands (1) from the buccal of the outer contour so that the matrix system does not move from its place after the matrix system is placed on the teeth to be restored, and compress them using a mouth spatula through the clamping surfaces (4). Mergen matrix system can be applied to two teeth at the same time. This matrix system can be easily placed in the area to be restored by hand or with an oral spatula, one of the instruments routinely used by dentists, in one piece. This matrix system can be placed between the related teeth to avoid any damage to the lateral tooth while preparing the cavity in the proximal region. In order to increase the contact of the teeth, it may be recommended to insert a wedge between the two teeth.
• Application of the Invention to Industry
The Mergen matrix system can be used in dentistry both to provide proximal contact in filling construction and as a cover to prevent damage to adjacent teeth.
