Abstract

Didactic device for learning the DNA structure and the replication process by means of assembling structures comprising: a sliding horizontal support acting as a base for the DNA structure for assembling said structure, a double rack strip and pieces representing the individual DNA components and the replication process.

Description

DIDACTIC GAME LEARN ABOUT YOUR DNA
OBJECT OF THE INVENTION The present invention may be included in the technical field of educational or demonstration devices, in particular in the field of biology and genetics teaching.
More specifically, the object of the invention refers to a didactic device for learning the structure of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA, hereinafter) and the replication process thereof by means of assembling structures, thus allowing relating the structures with concepts and developing the user skills such as observation, comparison, synthesis or analysis. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Didactic devices are an efficient strategy for achieving knowledge learning, both of concepts and processes and which help improving attitudes and competences of the user.
Existing didactic devices about DNA are mostly centred on recognizing the DNA components, its structure or the process of the synthesis of proteins. Document US2004/1 13362 describes a board game for learning concepts about the DNA such as the structure thereof. Document US3804417 describes a didactic game for learning concepts about the DNA and the protein translation process and the functionality thereof in the human body, similarly as document CN2103844 which also describes an educational model for teaching the protein synthesis process starting from DNA molecules.
Therefore, considering the aforementioned documents it is necessary to find alternatives directed to educational devices or models for learning both the DNA structure and the semiconservative replication process thereof, based on base complementarity.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides a didactic device for learning about the DNA structure and the replication process thereof by assembling structures, thus allowing relating the structures with concepts and developing the user skills such as observation, comparison, synthesis or analysis of these structures.
Therefore, an aspect of the present invention refers to a didactic device for learning the DNA structure and the replication process thereof comprising:
- a horizontal support,
- at least two movable sections located at the horizontal support,
- at least two sliding vertical supports located at the movable sections of the horizontal support for assembling the pieces so as to form the structures of the DNA strands,
- individual pieces of the components of the DNA strands that can be assembled both to the sliding vertical supports for fastening thereof and sliding through the horizontal support, and to other individual pieces of the DNA components so as to form the complementary strand in the double-stranded DNA, and
- a double vertical rack strip which is inserted between the double- stranded DNA and allows separating both DNA strands so as to represent the beginning of the replication process.
In a preferred embodiment the moving sections comprise, at least, two outer sections for mounting the initial double-stranded DNA and, at least, two inner sections for mounting complementary DNA strands in the replication process.

PREFERRED EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
The following is the description of a preferred embodiment of the invention based on the attached figures.
FIG 1 - It is a view of all the assembling pieces of the didactic device comprising a container for keeping the didactic device (1 a), a manual including instructions for mounting thereof and the game rules (1 b), a horizontal support acting as a base for mounting the structures (1 c) with the outer (1 ch-1 ) and inner (1 ch-2) moving sections, vertical supports for DNA strands (1 d) and for DNA complementary strands in the replication (1 e) and the double rack strip (1 f); it also shows pieces representing: the nitrogen bases: cytosine (1 g), guanine (1 h), thymine (1 i) and adenine (1j), the deoxyribose sugar (1 k), the phosphate groups (11), enzymes such as helicase (1 m), DNA polymerase (1 n), topoisomerase (1 n) and ligase (1 q), bonds between base pairs for representing double and triple bonds (1 o), vertical supports for the synthesized complementary strand in the opposite direction to the replication fork (1p) opening, SSB (1r) proteins and the synthesis direction (1s).

Claims

C L A I M S
1 . Didactic device for learning the DNA structure and the replication process thereof:
- a horizontal support,
- at least two moving sections located in the horizontal support,
- at least two sliding vertical supports located in the moving sections of the horizontal support for assembling the pieces so as to form the DNA strands structures,
- individual pieces of the components of the DNA strands assembling both to the sliding vertical supports for fastening thereof and sliding through the horizontal support, and to other individual pieces of the DNA components so as to form the complementary strand in the double- stranded DNA structure, and
- a double vertical rack strip being inserted between the double strand of the DNA and allowing separation of the two DNA strands so as to represent the beginning of the replication process.
2. Didactic device according to claim 1 , wherein the moving sections comprise, at least, two outer sections for mounting the initial double- stranded DNA, and at least two inner sections for mounting complementary DNA strands in the replication process.
