Abstract

The invention discloses certain fluoro and chloro cyano compounds of the 15th group of the periodic table with 1 to 5 cyano residues, represented by formula (I): [Catn+][Z1(Q1)6-m(CN)m)-]n, by a reaction using trimethylsilylcyanide, a method for their preparation; the compounds are used as ionic liquids in electrochemical or optoelectronic devices such as batteries, solar cells etc. The claimed compounds are described by 6 different Markush formulae (Ib)-(lg) [Cat n+] [(PF 1(CN) 5) ] n(lb) [Cat n+] [(PF 4(CN) 2) ] n(Ic) [Cat n+] [(PF 5(CN)) -] n(ld) [Cat n+] [(PCI 2(CN) 4) ] n(le) [Cat n+] [(PCI 3(CN) 3) ] n(lf) [Cat n+] [(PCI 4(CN) 2) -] n(Ig) Cat n+ is selected from the group consisting of inorganic cation CatlNORG n+ and organic cation CatORG; n is 1, 2, 3 or 4; the other variables are as defined in the claims: Representative compounds according to the above formulae are: [(n-Bu) 4N][PF 5(CN)], [(n-Bu) 4N] [cis-PF 4(CN) 2 ], [(n-Bu)4N][PF4(CN) 2], [(n-Bu) 4N] [trans-PF 4(CN) 2], [(n-Bu) 4N][mer-PF 3(CN) 3] [(n-Bu) 4N][PF 3(CN) 3], [(n-Bu) 4N] [fac-PF3(CN)3 ], [(n-Bu) 4N] [trans-PCI 2(CN) 4], [(n-Bu) 4N][PCI 3(CN) 3] ], [(n-Bu) 4N] [fac-PCI 3;(CN) 3], [(n- Bu) 4N][mer-PCI 3,(CN) 3], [(n-Bu) 4N] [trans-PCI 4(CN) 2], [(n-Bu) 4N] [cis-PCI 4(CN) 2], [(n-Bu) 4N] [PF(CN) 5](21).
