- the present invention relates to methods of storing and transporting sugarcane stem cuttings, as well as methods of increasing the yield of planted sugarcane stem cuttings.
- Single node stem sections have many advantages over traditional planting methods, especially with respect to a reduction in bulk material handling required for planting and associated labor.
- These single node stem sections comprise a stem section having an overall length ranging from about 2 to about 12 cm in length, more typically, from about 3 to about 8 cm in length, and desirably, from about 3.5 to about 4.5 cm in length.
- the single node stem cuttings can be prepared either manually or by mechanical means. Once planted, a stand of cane can be harvested several times; after each harvest, the cane sends up new sterns, called ratoons. Usually, each successive harvest gives a smaller yield, and eventually the declining yields justify replanting. Depending on agricultural practice, two to ten harvests may be possible between plantings.
- stem cuttings can negatively impact the stem cuttings and their ability to provide a suitable plant yield.

- Suitable additional method steps include, but not limited to, filling bag 10 with sugarcane stem cuttings (not shown) while bag 10 is suspended from rack 20; placing rack 20 within a vehicle (not shown) so that lowermost portion 101 of bag 10 is positioned above lowermost portion 201 of rack 20; transporting the sugarcane stem cuttings, bag 10 and rack 20 from a first location to a second location while suspending the sugarcane stem cuttings within bag 10 on rack 20; removing the sugarcane stem cuttings from bag 10; and planting the sugarcane stem cuttings.
