- the invention is a portable electronic book reader for gathering electronic reading material that adjusts and behaves in a fashion that complements and enhances learning capability of the user. It is possible to personalize the system according to the interest of the users.
- the system has the capability to closely follow, track, understand and finally respond to day-to-day needs of its owner, in terms of content requirement either for educational or recreational purposes.
- the system distributes digital contents of a book and other reading/audio-visual materials to the user.
- the system comprises one or more server; portable digital display device; personalization engine; recommendation engine; content transformation engine and semantic analyzer.
- the electronic book reader device have at least one processor for processing the data entered by the user and a storage medium which can store the user supplied data, content usage pattern, social activities and user-system interactions.
- the personalization engine is for obtaining personalization information based on atleast one identifier entered by the user, such as his choice of interest, his previous entries etc. It continuously monitors user reading speed/pattern for dynamically updating the personalization information. It captures hierarchical score for user's understanding on various topics.
- the personalization is done based on user's identifiers, cognition style, cognition pattern and usage of web semantics.
- the semantic analyzer analyzes both textual and multimedia content.
- the system has connectivity to backend content servers for pulling in more content.
- the recommendation engine in the present invention maps user's behavioural pattern to concept model for content personalization, content augmentation for smooth learning and content suggestions. Recommendation is based on the information obtained from personalization engine models, content for a user.
- the contents, which are aggregated in the server, are augmented based on the user model by its concept maps. This is achieved by creating combination of the book and a dictionary. It must be noted that term dictionary is used in a loose sense to mean detailed explanation of the terms.
- the system adds those content to the book based on the personalization if any available for the user. Once this is done, the book is packed and delivered to the user.
- the augmented content based on user model is transformed for display in the digital display device. At the user end, the user tries to read up the content just like any normal book. Moreover, the user can read the contents of the book just like any ordinary book.
- the content referred hereinbefore can be base content and supplementary content, which can be any kind of audio and video content.
- the system has the intelligence to keep a track of the user's behavioural pattern considering the nature of data that includes weekly diary of events, activities marks, grades if he/she is a student provided by each user thereby assessing his learning pattern and content usage pattern.
- the recommendation done by the system is based on this behavioural pattern.
- the learner feedback facility available in the system enables better recommendations.
- the personalization engine generates a cognition score based on user cognition style and cognition pattern. It triggers alerts to the recommendation engine based on changes in personal information.
- the system also provides for content concept modeling by data mining approach leveraging actual material discussed in electronic form.
- the system has a predefined arrangement of base content. This is because a standard content may not suit exactly what a user likes/needs. This primarily means skipping certain sections. This corresponds to the usual notion of starred sections.
- the base content can be complemented with additional content; this would make a lot of sense to some users who are slow learners to smoothen their learning curve.
