Description

TITLE
Holder for holding electronic devices with display surfaces FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to electronic devices with display surfaces. Particularly, the invention relates to the holder that releasably and rotatably holds electronic devices with display surfaces.
DEFINITIONS OF TERMS USED IN THE SPECIFICATION
The term ' semi flexible member' in this specification includes any structure that can be selectively deformed to support different viewing angles. The term 'semi flexible member'' further refers to structures that retain the deformity until further application of physical strength.
The term 'surface in this specification refers to surfaces such as glass surface, wooden surface, metallic surface, cement surfaces, granite surfaces, mortar surfaces and the like on which the holder of the invention can be removably attached.
The term 'magnetically responsive surface ' in this specification refers to surfaces such as iron surface, copper surface and the like, that are responsive to the magnetic field created by a magnet and to which the holder of the invention can be removably attached using a magnetic element.
These definitions are in addition to those expressed in the art. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION AND PRIOR ART
Electronic devices with display surfaces, in particular mobile phones, tablet computers and notebook computers have changed the way people work and communicate. Initially, mobile phones were used for receiving and making phone calls while being on the move. Initially, computers used to be the bulky devices that occupied a large floor space. However, with increased sophistication, the ubiquitous mobile phone has been used as a multi tasking device and the size of the computers has dramatically reduced. Mobile phones have been enabled to perform various activities including receiving and sending messages, emails and importantly being connected to the internet and computers have been configured in such a way that they can be carried on the palm of the user. With the availability of multiple features and technical advancements, the mobile phone, tablet computers and note book computers nowadays have become an integral part of the lives of many people.
Modern electronic devices such as tablet computer, notebook computer, personal digital assistant and the like provide the user with multi tasking capabilities. Using a tablet computer, the user can access audio and visual media such as books, periodicals, movies, music, games and also web content. The user can also execute several applications such as email, music player, video recorder, movie player on the tablet computer. Personal digital assistants and note book computers also provide the users with similar features and functionalities.
People spend at least two to three hours a day using one or the other above mentioned electronic device. They either talk on their mobile phone or send/receive emails through their tablet computer. They browse the worldwide web (internet) through either the tablet computer or mobile phone. In case of tablet computers, note book computers and certain higher end mobile phones, the user is able to access the internet on the move in order to obtain live television feed, high speed real time audio and video streaming. Since above mentioned electronic devices are continuously used by the users for a longer time period either for personal purposes or for the purpose of business, it becomes tedious and uncomfortable for a person to always hold an electronic device such as a tablet computer or note book computer or mobile phone in his/her hand and therefore this scenario has been considered as a limitation associated with the prolonged use of electronic devices such as mobile phone, tablet computers and notebook computers.
Using the above mentioned electronic devices (tablet computer, note book computer, mobile phone and the like) for prolonged hours forces the user to hold the electronic device in his/her hands in uncomfortable positions. Persisting with such uncomfortable positions for a longer period of time would not only cause fatigue but could also result in long term medical conditions especially to the wrist, neck, forearms etc. Accordingly, it is advantageous to manufacture a holder that provides the users with the option of viewing the display screen of the electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablet computers, note book computers and the like without continuously holding them in their hands. Accordingly, this invention envisages the use of a holder which permits the user to view the display screen of the electronic device without holding the device in his/her hand. Other work done in the field:
United States Patent 5661798 granted to Chen Tonny envisages a back clip structure for a mobile phone. The system in accordance with the above mentioned Patent includes a main body, a clip member and a stand. The main body is formed with a restricting seat and an engaging slot for fitting with the clip member. The clip member has an inner recess that provides for engaging the stand. The stand is placed in the inner recess of the clip member to support the mobile phone in an upright state. The stand is slidable along the side channels for height adjustments. When used with the mobile phone, the main body is dissembled from the clip member thereby permitting the mobile phone to be fitted into the mobile phone case. However the utility of the system envisaged by the above mentioned United States Patent is restricted to holding mobile phones. Moreover the system envisaged by the above mentioned United States Patent Application does not provide the user with the flexibility of viewing the hand held device from different viewing angles.
United States Patent 7818035 granted to Bury Henryk envisages a satellite phone holder which can be attached to other electronic devices such as a hands free mobile kit. The system envisaged by the above mentioned United States Patent can also be connected to a vehicle antenna in order to receive signals with better quality. The system in accordance with the above mentioned United States Patent includes a locking module which is composed of a disc with a liver. The electronic module of the holder has been equipped with a printed circuit board which provides for the operation of the satellite phone in different modes such as operating mode and idle mode.
United States Patent Application No. 2008/0149234 filed by Broumand Clifton teaches a mobile case that could be used as a device stand as well as a carrying case. The carrying case envisaged by the above mentioned United States Patent Application has ridges on the flap to prevent the handheld device from sliding down. The device stand also includes a recess to prevent the device from moving sideways. However the utility of the system envisaged by the above mentioned United States Patent Application is restricted to holding mobile phones. Moreover the system envisaged by the above mentioned United States Patent Application does not provide the user with the flexibility of viewing the hand held device from different viewing angles.
United States Patent Application No. 2009/0221333 filed by Harvey Charles envisages a support for a mobile phone. The support envisaged by the above mentioned United States Patent Application includes a platform hinged to a connector and a base hinged to the opposite end of the connector. The memory hinge in accordance with the system of the above mentioned United States Patent Application supports the phone in a variety of orientations. However the system envisaged by the above mentioned United states Patent Application suffers from the limitation that it supports only the mobile phones. OBJECT OF THE INVENTION

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The invention will now be described with reference to the embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings. The embodiments do not limit the scope and ambit of the invention. The description relates purely to the exemplary preferred embodiments of the invention and its suggested application.
According to the present invention, there is envisaged a holder that releasably and rotatably holds electronic devices with display surfaces. The holder allows the user to view the display surface of the electronic device such as mobile phone, ipod, tablet computer, calculator, personal digital assistant, note book computer, digital camera and the like without holding the electronic device in his/her hand.
FIGURE 1 illustrates the first preferred embodiment of the invention wherein there is shown a holder 100 configured to releasably and rotatably hold electronic devices with a larger display surface, such as tablet computer, notebook computer and the like. In accordance with FIGURE 1, the clip denoted by the reference numeral 12 includes two longitudinally extensible sidewalls 12A and 12B which are attached to the opposite ends of the clip.
The clip denoted by the reference numeral 12 has substantially rectangular shape. The clip 12 in accordance with the first preferred embodiment of the invention is adapted to rotatably and releasably hold electronic devices with larger display surfaces such as tablet computer, notebook computer and the like in order to facilitate viewing of the display surface of respective electronic devices. Two longitudinally extensible sidewalls indicated by reference numerals 12A and 12B respectively, are attached to the opposite sides of the clip 12 in order to allow the clip 12 to releasably and rotatably hold electronic devices of varying dimensions. The longitudinally extensible sidewalls 12A and 12B are adapted to be selectively extended depending upon the dimensions of the electronic device so that the electronic device fits tightly but releasably and rotatably with the sidewalls 12A and 12B. In accordance with the present invention, the sidewalls 12 A and 12B of the clip 12 are adapted to be expanded or elongated longitudinally in order to releasably and rotatably hold electronic devices of varying dimensions. The sidewalls 12 A and 12B of the clip 12 have been adapted to selectively and automatically get expanded depending upon the dimensions of the electronic device they are required to hold.
The clip 12 of the holder 100 is further configured to be selectively rotated in clockwise direction and counter clockwise direction so as to provide the user with options corresponding to viewing angles. Since electronic devices may vary from one another in terms of screen orientation and display format, the clip 12 is adapted to be selectively rotated in clock wise direction and counter clock wise direction. When clip 12 is rotated in clockwise direction or counter clockwise direction, the spatial orientation associated with clip 12 gets altered, thereby providing a different viewing angle for the user.
In accordance with the present invention, the semi flexible member denoted by the reference numeral 14 has substantially long tubular structure. The semi flexible member 14 can be deformed into different shapes but it remains firm in its position after deformation. Semi flexible member 14 is adapted to be selectively deformed along x axis, y axis and z axis in order to provide the user with the options pertaining to viewing angles. The semi flexible member 14 is manufactured either using a metallic substance, or plastic substance or rubber or any composite substance such as carbon fiber. Given its semi flexible nature, the semi flexible member 14 can be elongated, retracted, twisted and untwisted in any convenient direction so as to adjust the positioning of the clip 12 which releasably and rotatably holds electronic devices with display surfaces. By selectively deforming the semi flexible member 14 the user will be able to appropriately adjust the distance at which the electronic device and the corresponding display screen of the electronic device are held. It is evident from FIGURE 1 that the positioning of the clip 12, which releasably and rotatably holds the electronic device is adjusted by selectively displacing the semi flexible member 14 across the desired angle and the direction. The semi flexible member 14 can be elongated or retracted so as to adjust the height at which the clip 12 is placed. By positioning the clip 12 at appropriate height, it can be ensured that the display surface of the electronic device releasably and rotatably held by the clip 12 is positioned in line with the viewing angle or the line of sight of the user.
In accordance with the present invention, the semi flexible member 14 is connected to the clip 12 and gripping means 16 through two engaging brackets which are denoted by reference numerals 18A and 18B. The engaging bracket 18A is mounted on the clip 12 and engages the frontal end of semi flexible member 14. The engaging bracket 18B is mounted on the gripping means 16 and engages the distal end of semi flexible member 14. In accordance with the present invention, gripping means 16 further includes two more engaging brackets, one on the left hand side and another on the right hand side denoted respectively by reference numerals 18C and 18D. The engaging brackets 18C and 18D can be used to engage the semi flexible member 14 in different directions.
In accordance with the first preferred embodiment of the present invention, gripping means denoted by the reference numeral 16 comprises either a clamping means or a suction clip using which, the gripping means 16 can be releasably attached to various surfaces such as rigid surfaces and smooth surfaces. The function of gripping means 16 is to releasably fix the holder 100 on to a given surface in order to facilitate viewing of display surface of electronic device held by the holder 100. Ideally, the clamping means can be utilized for the purpose of releasably attaching the holder 100 to a rigid surface. Suction cup can be utilized for the purpose of releasably attaching the holder 100 to a slippery surface such as a surface made of glass or surface made of polished wood.
FIGURES 2, 3 and 4 are sketches illustrating the rear view, side view and top view respectively of the holder 100 in accordance with the first preferred embodiment of the present invention.
FIGURE 5 illustrates the second preferred embodiment of the present invention wherein holder 200 is adapted to releasably and rotatably hold electronic devices with smaller display surfaces, such as mobile phone, personal digital assistant (PDA), ipod, calculator, pager, satellite phone , digital camera and the like. The holder 200 is substantially similar to holder 100 and the components of holder 200 are also similarly labeled but with a different prefix.
In accordance with FIGURE 5, the holder 200 includes the clip which is denoted by the reference numeral 22. Two longitudinally extensible sidewalls 22 A and 22B are attached to the opposite ends of the clip 22. The clip 22 as shown in FIGURE 5 has lesser height and lesser width in comparison to the clip 12 illustrated in FIGURE 1. But apart from the variations in length and width, the features and the functionalities offered by the clip 22 illustrated in FIGURE 5 are same as that of the clip 12 illustrated in FIGURE 1. The dimensions i.e., the height and width of clip 22 as shown in FIGURE 5 have been reduced in order to enable the clip 22 to releasably and rotatably hold electronic devices with smaller display surfaces such as calculator, mobile phone, pager, satellite phone, personal digital assistant, digital camera and the like. In similarity to the operations of the clip 12, the clip 22 illustrated in FIGURE 5 can also be rotated in clockwise and counter clock wise directions.
In accordance with the second preferred embodiment of the present invention, gripping means denoted by the reference numeral 26 also comprises either a clamping means or a suction clip using which, the gripping means 26 can be releasably attached to various surfaces such as rigid surfaces and smooth surfaces. The function of gripping means 26 is to releasably fix the holder 200 on to a given surface in order to facilitate viewing of display surface of electronic device held by the holder 200. Ideally, the clamping means can be utilized for the purpose of releasably attaching the holder 200 to a rigid surface. Suction cup can be utilized for the purpose of releasably attaching the holder 200 to a slippery surface such as a surface made of glass or surface made of polished wood.
In accordance with FIGURE 5, the semi flexible member 24 is connected to the clip 22 and gripping means 26 through two engaging brackets which are denoted by reference numerals 28A and 28B. The engaging bracket 28A is mounted on the clip 22 and engages the frontal end of semi flexible member 24. The engaging bracket 28B is mounted on the gripping means 26 and engages the distal end of semi flexible member 24. In accordance with FIGURE 5, gripping means 26 further includes two more engaging brackets, one on the left hand side and another on the right hand side denoted respectively by reference numerals 28C and 28D. The engaging brackets 28C and 28D can be used to engage the semi flexible member 14 in different directions.
FIGURE 6 is the sketch illustrating the front view of the holder 200 in accordance with the second preferred embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to FIGURE 7, there is provided a gripping means denoted by the reference numeral 16 that makes use of the clamping arrangement to releasably fix the holder of the invention on to any given surface. The gripping means as shown in the FIGURE 7 includes a first engaging member 32 and a second engaging member 34. The clamping means 16 also includes a height adjustment member 36 and a locking member 38. The clamping arrangement is used to clamp the holder on to a given surface by selectively engaging the first engaging member 32 and the second engaging member 34 in such a way that the first engaging member 32 grips the upper portion of the surface and the second engaging means 34 grips the bottom portion of the surface . The height adjustment member 36 is used to govern the distance between the first engaging member 32 and the second engaging member 34. The locking member 36 is used to lock the height adjustment member at a particular position on the height adjustment member 36 such that the gap between the first engagement member 32 and second engagement member 34 remains a constant/ The locking member 36 ensures that the surface, on which the holder is fixed, is tightly held on to by first engaging member 32 and second engaging member 34.
In accordance with the present invention, first engaging member 32 also includes a substantially circular shaped central plate 40 which is essentially a permanent magnet. The magnetic central plate 40 acting as a permanent magnet allows the gripping means 16 to be firmly clamped on to magnetically responsive surfaces. The magnetic central plate 40 enables the gripping means 16 to be tightly fixed onto magnetically responsive surfaces, especially the surfaces made of iron or composites of iron since there exists a force of attraction between the magnetic central plate 40 and the magnetically responsive surface on to which the gripping means 16 is removably clamped.
In accordance with the present invention, the gripping means 16 further includes a knob (shown in FIGURE 6 and denoted by reference numeral 42C) which controls the movements of the magnetic central plate 40. The knob 42C is used to selectively adjust the position of the magnetic central plate 40 with respect to the surface (either magnetically responsive surface or magnetically non responsive surface) on which the gripping means 16 is fixed. The knob can be rotated in counter clockwise direction to move the magnetic central plate 40 upwards from the surface thereby loosening the grip of the magnetic central plate 40 on the surface. Similarly the knob can be rotated in clockwise direction to make the magnetic central plate 40 move downwards and towards the surface so that the magnetic central plate 40 tightly grips the surface thereby attaching the holder tightly on to the surface.
Referring to FIGURE 8, there is provided a gripping means which is denoted by the reference numeral 16. The gripping means 16 in accordance with FIGURE 8 makes use of a suction cup 42 instead of the clamping means to tightly attach the holder 100 to any given surface. The suction cap arrangement can be used to releasably attach the holder 100 to slippery surfaces such as surface made of glass or surface made of polished wood. The suction cup 42 is an object that uses the negative pressure of air to hold on to various surfaces.
The reference numeral 42A denotes the working face of the suction cup. As shown in the FIGURE 8 the working face 42A of the suction cup has a curved surface. When the central plate 40 of the suction cup, having substantially circular shape, is pressed against a flat surface, the volume of the space between the suction cup and the surface against which the suction cup 42 is pressed gets reduced. Such a decrease in the volume causes the air between the cup and the surface to be expelled past the rim of the suction cup. When the user ceases to apply physical pressure to the centre of the outside of the cup, the elastic substance of which the cup is made, tends to resume its original, curved shape. Because all the air has already been forced out of the inside of the suction cup, the cavity which tends to develop between the cup and the flat surface has little to no air in it, and therefore lacks pressure. The pressure difference between the atmosphere on the outside of the cup, and the low-pressure cavity on the inside of the suction cup keep the suction cup 42 attached to the surface.
In accordance with the present invention, the central plate of the suction cup denoted by reference numeral 40 includes a permanent magnet. The central plate 40 of the suction cup with its magnetic properties helps the suction cup 42 to be removably fixed on to magnetically responsive surfaces. When the magnetic central plate 40 of the suction cup is pressed against a metallic surface, in addition to the creation of pressure differential inside the suction cup, the central plate of the suction cup 40 due to the presence of a magnet also creates a strong magnetic field which attracts other magnetically responsive substances like iron or composites of iron. Due to the force of attraction created between the central plate of suction cup 40 and the metallic surface, in addition to the creation of pressure differential between the magnetic central plate of suction cup 40 and the magnetically responsive surface, the suction cup 42 can be tightly attached to a magnetically responsive surface.
The gripping means 16 as shown FIGURE 8 also includes a knob denoted by reference numeral 42C. The knob 42C is used to selectively adjust the positioning of the magnetic central plate 40 of the suction cup with respect to the working face 42A of the suction cup. The knob 42C can be selectively rotated in clockwise direction and counter clockwise direction to adjust the positioning of the magnetic central plate 40 of the suction cup with respect to the working face 42 A of suction cup 42.
In accordance with another alternate embodiment of the present invention, the clamping means and the suction cup as shown FIGURE 7 and FIGURE 8 respectively, can be provided in the form of a kit so that the user can selectively use the appropriate gripping means 16. The user will have a choice between using either a suction cup or a clip.
In accordance with another alternate embodiment of the present invention, the clip 12 illustrated in FIGURE 1 and clip 22 illustrated in FIGURE 5 can be provided in the form of a kit so that the user can selectively use the appropriate clip. The user of the holder will have a choice of using either the clip 12 that releasably and rotatably holds electronic devices with larger display surfaces such as tablet computer, notebook computer and the like or the clip 22 that releasably and rotatably holds electronic devices with smaller display surfaces such as mobile phone, ipod, calculator and the like.
In accordance with another alternate embodiment of the present invention, the holder for releasably and rotatably holding electronic devices with display surfaces further includes an illuminating means (not shown in the figures) extending from the semi flexible member, that enables the display screen of the electronic device held by the holder to be lit if required. The illuminating means could be selected from the group consisting of LED (Light Emitting Diode) or compact fluorescent lamp, neon lamp, sodium vapor lamp depending upon the lighting requirements of the user.
