Abstract
A novel method and apparatus for detecting trace quantities of energetic materials, such as explosives, is disclosed. The method comprises steps of placing a sample of suspect material within a test chamber; pressurizing said chamber with a gas, preferably an inert gas such as nitrogen or argon; providing energy to said suspect material; and measuring the acoustic signal produced within said test chamber as a function of time following said step of providing energy to said suspect material. Detection of an acoustic signal consistent with exothermic decomposition of an energetic material indicates the presence of energetic material within the sample. The method is sensitive, accurate, and rapid, and is less prone to false positives than other similar methods.
