Abstract
The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for encoding/decoding images based on an adaptive resolution. The present invention provides an image encoding method characterized by the steps of: converting a present block of an image into present blocks having a plurality of resolutions; selecting one of the initial resolution and the converted resolutions; and generating a bit stream including image encoding data in which the present block having the selected resolution is predicted, resolution data in which the information for the selected resolution is encoded, and motion information data in which motion information is encoded. The present invention can improve compression efficiency by adaptively selecting the resolution of the image in each of the predetermined encoding units and encoding the image having the selected resolution.
