Definitions
- the present invention relates to a vacuum cleaner, comprising a dust collecting compartment, an intake sleeve projecting into the dust collecting compartment, a bag holder inside the dust collecting compartment and an access lid, separated from the intake sleeve, for permitting access to the dust collecting compartment, wherein a dust bag having an air inlet opening is in- sertable into the bag holder in a first position, when the bag holder is removed from the intake sleeve, and is connected to the intake sleeve when the bag holder is in a second position displaced closer to the intake sleeve by means of a spring member, such that the intake sleeve is inserted into the air inlet opening of the dust bag.
- Most vacuum cleaners are adapted to accommodate a dust bag or filter bag inside a dust collector compartment in the vacuum cleaner, to collect dust and debris, which is drawn into the vacuum cleaner by means of the air flow generated by a motor and fan in the vacuum cleaner.
- the dust bag can either be non-disposable, preferably made of some kind of fabric, which can be taken out from the vacuum cleaner, emptied and reinstalled again, or of a disposable kind, preferably made of paper, which is exchanged by a new dust bag when the old is filled.
- a dust bag is normally essential for the function of the vacuum cleaner, since otherwise the motor and fan may become damaged by the dust and debris if the vacuum cleaner is operated with no dust bag inserted. For this reason it has been developed different kinds of so called no-bag safety de- vices, which are designed to give a warning signal or to make operation of the vacuum cleaner impossible or difficult when no dust bag is inserted in a proper way. Vacuum cleaners provided with a warning signal device are normally not preferred, since in that case the vacuum cleaner can be operated anyway despite the absence of a dust bag. Vacuum cleaners having a no-bag safety device, which makes operation impossible, requires a specially designed electrical switch and wiring, which disconnects the motor from the mains supply if a dust bag is missing. Such a solution is comparatively complicated to accomplish and accordingly becomes rather expensive.
- no-bag safety devices which makes operation difficult to perform, can be realized in a simple, inexpensive and reliable way.
- One way to accomplish such a device is to prevent closing of the access lid to the dust collector compartment by means of some kind of stop member, which is in a position for precluding closing of the lid when no bag is inserted.
- stop member When the stop member is in such a position, it is actually possible to run the electric motor, but the resulting suction effect through the nozzle will be poor or non- existent due to air leakage through the open lid.
- it is essential that the stop member and the controlling of the same is accomplished in a simple and inexpensive way without the need for several additional components, in order to preclude unnecessary increase in the cost of manufacturing the vacuum cleaner.
- No-bag safety devices operating in this way are known from the documents DE 19942483, EP 44501 and WO 03/020098, respectively.
- a bag holder which can be pivoted as well as displaced upwards when the access lid is opened, such that the bag holder projects from the access opening and the dust bag can be removed and exchanged with a new one.
- the spring force is adapted such that as soon as a new dust bag is inserted, the bag holder will be displaced and pivoted downwards into the dust collecting compartment by the weight of the dust bag.
- this no-bag safety device since an empty dust bag is rather light weight, the func- tion of this no-bag safety device will be unreliable due to the fact that only a slight seizing is required in the mechanism before the automatic displacement of the bag holder and dust bag will be out of operation. After some time it is also possible that the low force spring will be relaxed such that it will not be able to project the bag holder out of the access opening even when no dust bag is mounted in the bag holder.
- This no-bag safety device is also easy to manipulate in that the bag holder can be pushed into the dust collecting compartment with one hand while the other hand is closing the access lid.
- EP 44501 discloses a bag holder, which is pivotal between an upright position, projecting from the dust collecting compartment, and a downward pivoted state against a spring force, when it is positioned inside the dust collecting compartment and the access lid can be closed.
- the pivoting of the bag holder into the access opening is accomplished by means of an intake sleeve, provided in the access lid, which will abut a rim of a reinforcing plate arranged on the dust bag when closing the lid.
- the intake sleeve will not abut any portion of the bag holder, but instead a flange on the access lid will abut a latch shoulder on the bag holder and prevent closing of the access lid.
- this no-bag safety device is easy to manipulate in order to close the access lid even though no dust bag is inserted in the bag holder.
- the no-bag safety device in WO 03/020098 is similar to the device in EP 44501 in that the bag holder is pivotal between an upright position and a downward pivoted state against a spring force by means of an intake sleeve, which abuts a rim of a reinforcement plate on the dust bag when a such is mounted in the bag holder, but when no bag is inserted, a projection of the bag holder will protrude from the access opening and prevent closing of the access lid.
- the reinforcement plate is inserted into the bag holder with only a lower portion, which will give a poor and unstable mounting of the dust bag in the vacuum cleaner.
- the vacuum hose is connected to the vacuum cleaner via an intake sleeve provided in the access lid.
- This is a disadvantage when emptying or exchanging the dust bag since the vacuum hose will be an obstacle and the vacuum hose may have to be removed before the access lid is opened.
- the connection of the vacuum hose to the access lid also requires hinged mounting of the bag holder with a rather strong spring force, such that it can be pivoted at least partly out from the access opening in order to allow removal as well as mounting of the dust bag and the dust bag subsequently can be forced with its air opening over the intake sleeve when the access lid is closed.
- the basis for the invention is the understanding that the above object may be achieved in a vacuum cleaner where the intake sleeve is separated from the access lid and the dust bag can be inserted into the bag holder in a first position displaced away from the intake sleeve and is displaced, by means of a spring member, to a second position in which the intake sleeve is inserted into an air intake opening in the dust bag, by providing the bag holder with a stop member, arrange a positioning member inside the dust collecting compartment and spring bias the bag holder towards a third position, which the bag holder will assume when no dust bag is inserted in the bag holder and in which the stop member on the bag holder will prevent closing of the access lid.
- the bag holder will stop at the second position where it is arrested by means of the positioning member abutting against the dust bag and in which the stop member will not interfere with the access lid.
- the invention can be modified in many different ways.
- the bag holder is pivotally journalled around a pivot axis located remote from the access lid such that the bag holder is pivoted between the first, second and third positions.
- the bag holder could also be displaced by parallel displacement by means of some kind of parallel motion mechanism. Normally, this is not preferred since a parallel motion mechanism would probably increase the manufacturing costs.
- the dust bags employed in this kind of vacuum cleaners can be of many different types, such as disposable made of paper or non-disposable made of fabric.
- the dust bag is of a disposable type made of paper and provided with a reinforcement plate of cardboard, which is insertable into opposite facing and parallel grooves in the bag holder.
- a reinforcement plate is also advantageous for the positioning member to abut against since it is rather hard.
- the access lid is disposed in an upper portion of the vacuum cleaner and the vacuum hose is connected to an intake sleeve arranged in a front portion.
- the access lid could also be arranged, though it is not preferred, in for example a lateral side portion or on a bottom side.
- the bag holder could be oriented in different directions.
- the intake sleeve could be provided in other positions than in a front portion.
- One advantage with having the intake sleeve in a front portion is that the air flow through the vacuum cleaner will be substantially straight, which is beneficial in respect of low flow effect losses.
- vacuum cleaners of so called canister type being provided with a hose and tube as in the embodiment described hereinafter, or vacuum cleaners of so called stick type.

- a hose connection 2 for a not shown hose and tube.
- the vacuum cleaner is moreover provided with wheels 3 for facilitating moving over a floor or the like.
- a dust collecting compartment 4 is arranged in an area behind the hose connection 2 in which a dust bag 5 is insertable and into which access is permitted by means of an openable access Hd 6.
- fig 1 is illustrated when a dust bag 5 is being inserted into the dust collecting compartment 4.
- the dust bag is of a common type comprising a flexible bag of an air permeable paper bag having a reinforcement plate 7 of cardboard, in which an air inlet opening 8 is provided, wherein an air sealing 9 is arranged around the periphery of the opening.

- opposed edge portions of the reinforcement plate 7 are slid into opposed facing grooves 11 in respective edge portion of the bag holder 10.
- the bag holder 10 is also provided with a circular aperture 12, two elongated vertical slots 13 and two stop members 14 in an upper portion.
- the bag holder When mounted in the vacuum cleaner, the bag holder is hinged around its lower end and biased, by means of a spring 15 as illustrated in figs 5 and 6, towards the front end of the vacuum cleaner.
- the bag holder When no dust bag is inserted, the bag holder will assume the position illustrated in fig 3, in which the bag holder 10 is forced in a forward direction such that an intake sleeve 16, being associated with the hose connection 2, will project through the aperture 12 and fin shaped positioning members 17, arranged in the forward end of the dust collecting compartment, will project through the vertical slots 13.
- the bag holder 10 When inserting a dust bag 5 in the vacuum cleaner, the bag holder 10 is gripped by one hand of an operator, preferably at one of the stop members 14, and is pivoted backwards against the action of the spring 15 to a first position, in which the intake sleeve 16 and the positioning members 17 are not projecting through the aperture 12 and the slots 13, respectively.
- a dust bag 5 In this first position, which is illustrated in fig 1 , a dust bag 5 may be inserted by sliding the reinforcement plate 7 into the grooves 11 in the bag holder without any interference with the intake sleeve 16 or the positioning members 17.
- the operator can release the grip of the bag holder, which will have to effect that the bag holder by means of the spring 15, will assume an intermediate second position, as is illustrated in figs 2 and 5, in which the intake sleeve 16 pro- jects through the aperture 12 in the bag holder 10 and a distance into the air inlet opening 8 in the dust bag such that the air sealing 9 is in sealing contact with the outer surface of the intake sleeve 16.
- This second position is fixed by the positioning members 17 abutting against the front surface of the reinforcement plate 7.
- the access lid 6 can be closed in this position since the stop members 14 will be accommodated in a recess 18 on the inside of the access lid.
- the bag holder 10 when no dust bag 5 is inserted into the vacuum cleaner, the bag holder 10 will assume a third position, as is illustrated in figs 3 and 6, in which the bag holder is pivoted to the most forward position in the dust collecting compartment, since the positioning members 17 do not abut any reinforcement plate 7 of a dust bag 5.
- the stop members 14 in this third position bear against a stop shoulder 19 on the inside of the access lid 6 such that it can not be completely closed. This has to effect that air will leak into the dust collecting compartment through the partly opened access lid and the vacuum cleaner can not be operated.
