Abstract
A bidirectional optical power monitor that even in use in multichannel mode, allows downsizing and attains less light loss. The bidirectional optical power monitor comprises first and second optical fibers whose core end faces are bonded to each other by fusion with the optical axes of cores thereof being offset, wherein portion of the core end face of each of the optical fibers protrudes from the other core end face at the fusion bonded area. The first optical fiber in its cladding layer is provided with a U-shaped groove and the second optical fiber in its cladding layer provided with a light reflective surface, the light reflective surface and the side face of the U-shaped groove each disposed opposite to the protrudent portion of core end face. A first photodiode and a second photodiode detect any third-order or fourth-order mutually strengthened light with respect to light having leaked from one core end face of optical fiber into the cladding layer of the other optical fiber. This bidirectional optical power monitor is capable of measuring an optical signal propagating from one optical fiber to the other and an optical signal propagating from the other to the one both with less light propagation loss.
