Abstract

A chain tensioner in which the position of a plunger can be reliably fixed when the engine is being stopped. In a chain tensioner (1), a plunger (10) is slidably inserted in a cylinder (9). The plunger (10) is formed in a tubular shape having an insertion end inserted in the cylinder (9), and the inner periphery of the insertion end has a female thread (16). A screw rod (18) having on its outer periphery a male thread (17) engaging with the female thread (16) is provided in the cylinder (9). The male thread (17) and the female thread (16) have a sawtooth shape in which the flank angle α of a pressure flank (19) is greater than the flank angle β of a clearance flank (20). A return spring (21) mounted between the plunger (10) and the screw rod (18) urges the plunger (10) in the direction in which the plunger (10) projects from the cylinder (9), and the plunger (10) presses the chain (6). At least one of the pressure flank (19) of the male thread (17) and the pressure flank (19) of the female thread (16) is mat finished.
