Definitions
- the present invention relates to a combined set of a control display and an alarm signal generator, said control display comprising at least one indicator provided for indicating an operational status of a tool, said alarm signal generator being provided for generating an alarm signal upon establishing that said operational status has reached a predetermined critical stage.
- Such a combined set is generally known and is for example used in vehicles such as cars.
- the control display is most of the time present in the vehicle dashboard and for example formed by a needle indicator, a line indicator or a warning lamp.
- the indicator indicates an operational status of a tool, which in the case of a car can be the speed, the water/oil temperature of the engine, the charging of the battery, etc.
- the alarm generator When it has been established that the operational status has reached a predetermined critical stage such as for example a too high temperature, a speed excess, an insufficient battery charging, the alarm generator generates an alarm signal which could be a warning light which lights up or the needle being in a zone marked as red.
- Some higher class cars are even equipped with a built in alarm generator provided with a speech generator. The latter then generates a spoken message in order to indicate vocally the malfunctioning. So, for example a message "engine temperature too high” could be generated and emitted via a loudspeaker.
- a drawback of the known combined set is that often the system is solely optical, such as the warning light or a red zone, so that the attention of the user or driver is insufficiently drawn. Especially electromechanical needle meters tend to give only a non alarming optical indication.
- the systems using a speech generator are rather expensive and therefore not available to a large majority of users. When the attention of the user is not sufficiently drawn to a malfunctioning of the vehicle or other problems such as speed excess or too high engine regimes, this can lead to problems of engine damage or speed excess fees, which could have been avoided if a better and more efficient warning would have taken place.
- a combined set according to the present invention is characterised in that said alarm signal generator comprises at least one sensor applied on said indicator in such a manner as to detect that said indicator indicates that said critical stage has been reached.
- the use of a sensor enables to apply the latter on the indicator, even after the manufacturing of the tool and thus to provide an easy and non expensive way to equip the tool.
- the sensor As the sensor is applied in such a manner as to detect the critical stage, the sensor will detect it and generate the alarm signal thereby providing an efficient, reliable and cheap alarm generator.
- the user will recognise the alarm signal, he or she will be in a position to immediately react thereby avoiding the drawbacks such as engine damage or speed excess fees.
- a first preferred embodiment of a combined set according to the invention is characterised in that said indicator is formed by a display indicating a subsequent set of values representing operational values relating to said operational status, said sensor being provided for recognising a predetermined one of said values. In such a manner the sensor is easily associated with the predetermined value indicated on the display.
- a second preferred embodiment of a combined set according to the invention is characterised in that said indicator is formed by a light source provided for being activated upon reaching said predetermined critical stage, said sensor being provided for detecting light generated by said light source. When the indicator is formed by a light source the lighting up of the latter is not always immediately observed by the user. The detection by the sensor that light is generated by the light source provides a reliable warning tool.
- a third preferred embodiment of a combined set according to the invention is characterised in that said alarm signal generator comprises a plurality of said sensors, each of them being provided for detecting each time a dedicated value of said set of values, said alarm signal generator being provided with a selection unit provided for selecting among said dedicated values. This is useful for speed monitoring in a vehicle were the user can in such a manner select among a plurality of speed values for generating a speed excess signal.
- a fourth preferred embodiment of a combined set according to the invention is characterised in that said alarm signal generator comprises a plurality of said sensors extending at locations where at least some of said values of said set are located, each of said sensors being connected to an auxiliary display provided for displaying data obtained from sensor signals generated by said sensors.
- the use of an auxiliary display provides the user a possibility to group all alarm indicators in this auxiliary display.
- said sensor(s) is(are) applied on a sheet of transparent material.
- This sheet of transparent material can then for example be applied on a vehicle dashboard without obstructing the view to the indicators.
- figure 1 shows a generic sample of a factory installed car dashboard provided with a speed indicator and an engine temperature meter
- figure 2 shows an embodiment of the alarm generator as part of the combined set according to the invention
- figure 3 shows an embodiment of the combined set according to the invention installed into the dashboard of a vehicle
- figure 4 shows another embodiment of the alarm generator as part of the combined set according to the invention
- figure 5 shows the embodiment of figure 4 installed into the dashboard of a vehicle
- figure 6 shows an installation of the alarm generator on a transparent sheet, which installation uses a plurality of sensors applied along an array
- figure 7 shows an example of a dashboard where the sensor or sensor's array is being embodied on the display board surface at manufacturing of the car.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a dashboard 1 of a car provided with a speed indicator 2 and an engine temperature meter 3. The dashboard is applied in a dashboard cavity 10.
- the speed and temperature indicator are formed by a display indicating a subsequent set of values representing operational values relating to the operational status, i.e. speed values for the speed indicator and temperature values for the temperature indicator.
- the dashboard could comprise other indicators such as for example a battery charge indicator, a revolution counter, etc., but for the sake of clarity only the speed and engine temperature indicator are shown.
- the subsequent set of values are applied along a circle and the indicators further comprise a rotationally movable needle 4, 5 provided for moving along said values.
- the subsequent set of values are applied along a line and the indicators further comprise a movable member, such as for example a pointer, provided for moving along said values.
- the indicator is formed by a light source provided for being activated upon reaching a predetermined critical stage. So, for example, the light source could be activated if the alternator would not sufficiently charge the battery.
- FIG. 2 shows an embodiment of the alarm generator as part of the combined set according to the invention.
- the alarm generator comprises at least one sensor 70, connected via a cable 50 to an electronic circuit 40, provided for producing an alarm signal, for example in the form of an audio signal, a light signal or even a voice signal.
- the alarm generator is applied preferably on a thermo formed or moulded plastic sheet 30 made of transparent material.
- the sheet hosts on its plate area the electronic circuit 40, preferably housed in a casing, the cabling 50 and the sensors 70.
- the sensors 70 are applied, as illustrated in figure 3, in such a manner on the indicator, as to detect a critical stage which has been reached by the considered indicator.
- 120 km/h and 110 0 C are considered as a critical stage for the speed value, respectively for the engine temperature value.
- sensor 70-1 is applied on the location where the value indicating 120 km/h of the speed indicator is displayed and sensor 70-2 is applied on the location where the value indicating 110°C of the engine temperature is displayed. So, when the needle 4 of the speed indicator will have reached the position indicating 120 km/h, the needle will face sensor 70-1 and the latter will detect the presence of the needle having reached the location where sensor 70-1 is applied.
- sensors 70-1 detects the presence of the needle 4
- the sensor will generate a signal, which is transmitted via the cable 50 to the electronic circuit 40.
- the circuit Upon receipt of the signal, the circuit will trigger the generation of the alarm signal.
- sensors 70-2 detects the presence of needle 5 indicating 110°C.
- the sensors' positioning on the sheet 30 is thus determined so that the location where the predetermined critical stage is displayed can be recognised.
- the indicator When the indicator is provided with a needle, this location will be the one where the needle has reached the critical stage.
- the indicator is formed by a line indicator, it will be the position where the pointer has reached the critical stage.
- the sensor When a warning light is used as indicator the sensor is applied such as to detect a light generation produced by the warning light source.
- the sensor is preferably applied on the sheet of material, which is dimensioned such as to overlay on a dashboard, in particular of a vehicle and more particular of a car.
- the sheet 30 is preferably applied on the dashboard by a clip-in action and dimensioned such as to overlay on the dashboard.
- the installation point(s) of the sensor(s) on the sheet can be fixed or can be moved. In the latter case the possibility of regulation of the sensor's position with respect to the needle's position to be monitored is offered.
- the sheet 30 is shaped according to the dashboard cavity 10, hosting the indicators of the dashboard and is installed in order to create a surface to surface attachment of the sheet's 30 lower surface and the top surface of the board transparent cover 20.
- the sheet 30 carries on its lower surface the circuit casing 40. Tracking 60, 60 * and other cavities are shaped on the surface of the sheet 30 and may be necessary for the installation of system parts and the distribution of wiring.
- the electronic circuit casing 40 could be installed away from the viewing field of the driver.
- a desired result of the alarm signal generator installation would be to have a clear smooth sheet without protrusions on the front surface of the sheet 30 in such a manner as to easily clean off gathered dust.
- the moulded clear transparent plastic sheet 30 would need to have the necessary thickness, which would allow the creation of cavities in the lower surface of the plate, which would host the necessary parts of the alarm generator, without any protrusions on the top surface. Further the system parts could be moulded into the sheet's 30 material.
- the power supply of the alarm generator could be independent from the vehicle's power supply by use of photovoltaic cells or could be connected to the vehicle power supply system.
- the alarm generator could be designed to be switched into a sleeping mode when the car engine is not operating and be switched into operation when the engine starts.
- a possible way to implement the latter could be a vibration sensor.
- proximity sensors are used, the use of infrared light as the light source would give a strong advantage in order to avoid false indications from stray light.
- Display improvement or other light control effects on the sheet 30 may improve the sensors' operability and display effectiveness of the combined set.
- Such effects could be lens effects, antiglare effects , light coefficient repair effects, etc.
- the sheet 30 is designed to fit into the dashboard cavity 10 by a clip-in action, in such a manner that the sensors 70 are brought into monitoring position by pressing the sheet 30 with the alarm generator onto the surface of the transparent cover 20 of the factory installed dashboard.
- the sheet is provided with clamping means for clamping said sheet on said dashboard.
- the sheet could also be provided with points of support, which points of support coincide and are able to be entangled with pre-existing points of support on the dashboard.
- the sheet could be applied by self suction means or self adhesive means.
- the sheet is either moulded from clear transparent plastic or could be thermoformed.
- Figure 4 shows a miniature alarm generator capable to be attached to the transparent cover of the meter/s present in the dashboard.
- This embodiment offers the ability to use a turning arm 10 having a large angle rotation for the purpose of installing the arm at a selected position of needle in the indicator to be monitored.
- This may for example operate as a speed monitoring alarm device which offers alarm for a predefined speed limit. This may be useful for drivers trying to keep within the road speed limit in order to avoid over-speed fines. Taxi drivers could for example be interested in this solution.
- the long time use of taxi vehicles often leads to relatively frequent replacement of engines, gearboxes and tyres. Due to the fact that the replaced parts are not always genuine parts, this often has the result of inaccuracy of the speedometer, which on its turn leads to wrong speed indications of the speedometer.
- the turning arm 10 is provided with a reflective optical sensor hosting part 11 , which is located at the end of the arm 4 and provided for hosting the sensor 70.
- a base part 16 of the arm is shown, which can be a suction attachment or an adhesive layer.
- a main casing 18 of the arm On top of the base part is a main casing 18 of the arm, which casing contains the electronic circuitry 40 and on the top of it is shown a part 12, which may be an audio exit hole or a flashing led, used for alarm indication to the driver.
- Figure 5 shows the turning arm 10 of figure 4 in installed condition on the dashboard's transparent cover. It is located on the centre axis of the meter needle 4, in order to enable the arm 10 and the sensor 70 housed therein to follow the same angular motion of the needle, allowing a selection of the speed limit to be monitored.
- Figure 6 shows an installation of the alarm generator on a transparent sheet, which installation uses a plurality of sensors 70. The sensors extend at locations where at least some of the values of the set are located. The sensors are applied along an array and provided for example for monitoring a plurality speed values indicated by the needle of the speed indicator. By this a spectrum of speed values can be selected and an alarm signal can be generated at different speeds.
- the same array could be used for the production of mirror /espond signals to the needle's motion, which could be used for driving secondary display control boards.
- the alarm generator is provided for detecting each time a dedicated value of the set of values.
- the alarm signal generator is further provided with a selection unit provided for selecting among said dedicated values.
- Each of the sensors could be connected to an auxiliary display provided for displaying data obtained from sensor signals generated by the sensors.
- Figure 7 shows an example of a dashboard where the sensor 70 or sensor's array 70' is being embodied on the display board surface at manufacturing of the car.
- the sensors are provided for monitoring the needle from its lower surface side.
- the manufacturer succeeds with low cost alterations or additions to the existing meters' design, to transfer the mechanical indication of the needle into an electronic one.
- Various electronic operations can be succeeded by this, like electronic feedback to the vehicles' computer, alarm signals, cruise speed control, etc.. This may enable the vehicle manufacturer to avoid using expensive sophisticated electronic display boards and therefore reduce the car manufacturing cost. Because this installation is factory designed, the manufacturer can alter the sensors' type and needle construction, in order to be able to use other types of sensors than optical, e.g. magnetic sensors could be used.
