Definitions
- the present invention relates to a female connector part, which female connector part forms a part of a connection comprising a female connector part and a male connector part for use in a system for flowing fluid and which female connector part is adapted for sealing and secured interconnection.
- the female connector part according to the invention is developed for systems for flowing gas such as, for example, air, but may also be employed for other fluids.
- a possible application of the female connector part according to the present invention is in compressed air systems for vehicles, such as, for example, brake systems for heavy vehicles.
- the blocking tongues are a key element in the interlocking of the female connector part and the male connector part.
- the female connector part forms part of a connector which is generally referred to as a rapid coupling consisting of a female and a male connector part which can easily be assembled to form a locking and sealing engagement.
- the female comiector part with blocking tongue according to the present invention may furthermore have a release mechanism geometry or design that permits the female connector part to be released from the male connector part by means of a suitable tool.
- the female connector part according to the present invention has been developed with a protective structure surrounding the blocking tongues.
- the protective structure offers protection against misuse of the blocking tongues, if they are designed with a geometry that enables them to be released, in addition to various stresses such as mechanical damage and overloading of the material in the blocking tongue(s).
- the protective structure offers protection against impact and inadvertent release of the connector by the blocking tongue being moved in such a manner that it is released from the engagement that locks the male connector part and the female connector part. Impact may occur in several ways and if, for example, the connector is employed in a brake pipe system on a vehicle, impact can occur due to spattering by stones or when objects in the roadway hit a connector.
- the protective structure according to the present invention is therefore highly advantageous with respect to the integrity of the female connector part in a system and provides improved safety in the event of failure resulting from the above-mentioned factors.
- Various connectors of this type are known, for example from WO 96/24003 which describes a coupling sleeve with longitudinal, integrated blocking tongues arranged in the inserting direction. Further solutions are known from GB 1 521 448 as well as EP 1 333 217 and US 5,988,704. A female connector part with blocking tongues designed for a releasing function is also described in the applicant's own patent application NO 20040441.
- a female connector part is described here with integrated blocking tongues with a locking dog that engages with a corresponding groove in a male connector part.
- the blocking tongues are provided with a recess or hole to enable them to be gripped by a suitable tool, with the result that the blocking tongues and the locking dogs are moved out of engagement with the groove in the male connector part.
- a principal feature of the present invention is the formation of a secured and sealing connection between the male and female connector parts.
- the sealing connection is formed by the use of one or more seals between the connector parts, e.g.
- the male connector part is further provided with a collar, groove or recess that lockingly engages with the locking dog on the blocking tongue. This locks the male and female connector parts together.
- a female connector part is provided with blocking tongues, which female connector part forms a part of a connection comprising a female connector part and a male connector part for use in a system for flowing fluid, which female connector part is adapted for sealing and secured interconnection with the male connector part, which female connector part is provided with one or more integrated blocking tongues with at least one locking dog provided to engage lockingly with a collar, a recess or a groove in the outer periphery of the male connector part for locking interconnection.
- the female connector part according to the present invention is characterised in that it is provided with a protective element that covers the whole or parts of one or more blocking tongues.
- a particular object of this protection is to redress the above-mentioned problems by offering protection particularly against mechanical stress such as impact in addition to restricting the blocking tongue's outward movement from the connector part's longitudinal axis, thus preventing inadvertent release from occurring or overloading of the elastic connection for the blocking tongue. Furthermore, cracking due to frost will be counteracted by the fact that corresponding cracking will occur in the area between the blocking tongue and the protective element, which prevents movement of the blocking tongue.
- the protective element will also prevent movement of the blocking tongue which overloads the elastic material in the blocking tongue's integrated attachment.
- the protective element may form an integrated part of the female connector part.
- the blocking tongue or blocking tongues may be elastically attached as a result of their material or by means of their connection with the connector part. This elastic motion causes the blocking tongue to move outwards from the connector part's longitudinal axis when the male connector part is pushed into engagement.
- the blocking tongues are arranged in the inserting direction for the male connector part.
- the blocking tongues may be mounted at different angles relative to this direction.
- the blocking tongue may further be provided with a geometry that forms a release mechanism. This may be composed of a hole or opening which is completely or partly through-going and which can be gripped by means of a suitable tool in order to pull the blocking tongue with the locking dog out of engagement with the collar, recess or groove in the outer periphery of the male connector part. Alternatively, this may be composed of a lug which can be gripped by means of a suitable tool in order to pull the blocking tongue with the locking dog out of engagement.
- the blocking tongues have release mechanisms that can be employed by a tool, e.g. pliers of the type used on Seeger circlip rings, in order to tilt the blocking tongues away from each other, thus enabling the male connector part and the female connector part to be released from each other.
- a tool e.g. pliers of the type used on Seeger circlip rings
- the protective element may be mounted at a distance from the blocking tongue substantially corresponding to the maximum movement for pulling the blocking tongue with the locking dog out of engagement with the collar, recess or groove in the outer periphery of the male connector part.
- the protective element may be mounted at a distance from the blocking tongue substantially corresponding to the maximum permitted elastic motion of the blocking tongue during release of the connector. This prevents the material's properties and restrictions being exceeded so that the connector is compromised and loses its ability to be a secure and/or sealing connection.
- the protective element may be relatively rigid in the release mechanism's direction of motion.
- the blocking tongue(s) are mounted substantially in the connector part's longitudinal direction and are movable perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction.
- the connector formed by the female connector part and the male connector part may further preferably be rotatable after interconnection, i.e. the female and male connector parts can rotate relative to each other about the connector's longitudinal axis.
- the female connector part is therefore preferably designed accordingly.
- the male connector part may be provided with a collar or a circular groove along the circumference or along parts of the circumference. Since the male connector part is provided with a groove along the circumference where one or more blocking tongues with locking dog engage with this groove, the female connector part and the male connector part can rotate relative to each other about the connector's longitudinal axis.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a connector part according to the present invention.
- Figure 2 is a plan view from the side and partial section of a connector part according to the present invention.
- Figure 3 is a plan view from the side and partial section of a female connector part according to the present invention interlocked with a male connector part.
- a female connector part 1 is illustrated provided with two blocking tongues 2.
- the female connector part 1 is provided for use in a system for flowing fluid. It is particularly intended for use in a compressed air system.
- the female connector part is designed to correspond to a male connector part. Connection between the two is accomplished by the male connector part being inserted in the female connector part until the two achieve locking and sealing engagement by means of seals and blocking tongues with locking dogs as illustrated in figure 3.
- the female connector part 1 has a blocking tongue 2 on each side of the connector part's 1 central axis.
- the blocking tongues are elastically integrated in the connector part 1 and each of the blocking tongues 2 has a locking dog 3.
- the locking dog 3 projects into a correspondingly shaped groove 8 in the male connector part.
- the male connector part is provided with a groove 8 along its circumference and when the connector part is inserted in the female connector part, the locking dog 3 engages with the groove 8.
- the blocking tongues 2 will move elastically outwards from the centre axis, permitting the male connector part to be pushed into the female connector part past the locking dogs 3 until they engage with the groove 8 in the male connector part.
- the blocking tongues are provided with a release mechanism geometry 4 that permits the blocking tongues 2 to be gripped by a suitable tool and pulled outwards from the centre axis, thus causing them to disengage with the male connector part.
- a recess 4 is shown in the figures. However, this can be in the form of a lug or a hole which is completely or partially through-going.
- the release mechanism geometry 4 makes it possible to grip the blocking tongues 2 and pull them elastically outwards from the centre axis in the connector part 1 so that the blocking elements 3 are disengaged.
- a protective element 5 is illustrated mounted on the outside of the blocking tongues 2.
- the object of this element 5 is to protect the blocking tongues particularly against mechanical damage such as an impact.
- the protective element 5 also prevents the blocking tongues 2 from moving too far out during release, thereby destroying the blocking tongues' 2 elastic properties due to overloading. Overloading of this kind will compromise the connector part's ability to be reused since the blocking tongues 2 will not be able to create an adequate engagement in the male connector part via the locking dogs 3. It further restricts the possibility of the release mechanism geometry 4 inadvertently becoming jammed and being pulled out with the result that the connector is uncoupled and can be pulled apart.
- the protective element 5 offers protection against dirt and other mechanical stress.
- the protective element 5 prevents inadvertent release on account of cracking due to frost if moisture is collected between the male connector part and the blocking tongue 2 which, when it freezes to form ice, can cause the blocking tongue 2 with the locking dog 3 to be forced out of engagement with the male connector part. In this case moisture will also form between the blocking tongue 2 and the protective element 5 which counteracts cracking of this kind.
