  • the symbols are of multiple distinguishable types. In the present embodiment, eleven different types of symbol are provided. However, a different number of symbols may alternatively be provided.
  • the positions of the particular symbols in the array 9 are determined by the EGM controller 2 using a random number generator to allocate the positions randomly. In the present embodiment, the symbols and their positions are generated randomly. However, in an alternative embodiment, the total number and type of symbol is fixed, and only the locations are randomly determined. In a further embodiment, a combination of both methods is employed, with some of the symbols being fixed and some randomly generated.
  • Play means in the EGM 1 then automatically identifies sets of symbols fulfilling predetermined criteria, as discussed in detail below. Once identified, a win is determined, by the win evaluation means in the EGM 1 for determining a win evaluation dependent on the identified sets of symbols. The sets are highlighted for the player to see with highlighting means. The identified sets are then removed, and the symbols above the removed sets in the array 9 fall into the spaces left. The identification process is then repeated. In the present embodiment, the identification and removal process is repeated until no more sets are identified, at which point the game ends, unless a new lot of symbols are purchased as a top up.
  • the player can choose the number of columns to bet on, and the amount bet on each column. Only sets completely within the chosen columns are identified and cause a win evaluation. Thus, a player is able to choose the extent of play in a game. The player can bet on all or some of the columns during a single round of betting using the same apparatus. It would also be possible to extend the play area by adding extra rows based on the amount bet.
  • the EGM 1 then pays out any winnings in accordance with the bets laid.
  • the bets themselves are conventional. Winning arrangements that fall outside the columns selected by the player do not result in the player receiving any prizes for those arrangements. All arrangements that are located within the play area are paid according to the bets placed by the player. In most cases the prize for a particular arrangement will be multiplied by the bet per column. However, in some variations to the game, prizes can be paid by being multiplied by the total bet (number of columns multiplied by the bet per column).
  • the game allows the ability not only to award initial, primary, pays, but also for secondary, and further, pays, without any interaction by the player. Such 'cascade' wins offer increased pays for the player.
  • Figures 2a to 2i show displays from a gaming screen 5 as discussed in relation to Figure 1 in different states of play.
  • Figure 2a shows the initial population of the array with symbols of multiple types. The array has twenty columns and thirty-three rows in the present embodiment. The player has chosen only to play the left hand ten columns in the game, and the right hand ten are shaded to show this, and are not included in the game.
  • Figure 2b shows the screen after the sets have been identified by the gaming apparatus using predetermined criteria.
  • the criteria for a set are that three or more identical symbols must be adjacent to one another either vertically or horizontally, or a combination of the two, and the symbols must all be within the play area sets.
  • FIG. 2b in column 1 , rows 1 , 2 and 3, three aces 11 are shown in a vertical line, which is a winning set. Additionally, below the three aces, three Kings 12 are shown in an 'L' shape.
  • Such a combination is also a set because each symbol is next to, either vertically or horizontally, an identical symbol, and the total number of identical symbols is three. There is no limit to the number of symbols in the set, up to the total number of symbols in the array.
  • a set could include only two adjacent identical symbols.
  • a set could be formed from predetermined series of symbols, e.g. a poker hand.
  • other types of symbol could be used, e.g. differently coloured symbols, e.g. balls or other shapes.
  • the identified sets are highlighted on the screen for the player to see, before they are removed. Once the win evaluation of the round has been determined, the highlighted sets are removed, as shown in Figure 2c. As can be seen in Figure 2c, the remaining symbols in a particular column that were above a removed symbol in a set fall down into the space vacated by that removed symbol. The height of the stack of symbols in each such column is therefore reduced. Additionally, if the number of symbols in the stack is reduced to zero then all columns to one side of the now empty column are shifted laterally to close the gap. If there are no columns to the side of the emptied column, then no column shifting occurs.
  • FIG. 2d shows further sets of symbols identified and highlighted.
  • the criteria in the second round of identification are the same as in the first round, although they could, alternatively, be different. These symbols have become adjacent due to the movement of remaining symbols downwards when the previously identified symbols were removed.
  • a win evaluation is determined and returned to the player.
  • the game ends here.
  • the identified and highlighted sets of symbols are removed, as shown in Figure 2e.
  • the identification is carried out a third time, and the process of win evaluation calculation and highlighting repeated, again with the same criteria, as shown in Figure 2f.

  • these identified sets would preferably not cause a win for the player. The player would instead be able to see the opportunity of a win that had been lost through not playing those columns.

  • the operation starts at S302.
  • the EGM 1 awaits coins received by the input 3 at S304. Once sufficient balance has been deposited, the bet is entered by the player at S306 and the columns to be played chosen at S308. Once the columns and bet levels are set, the coins/credits are deducted on pushing the 'Go' button. If insufficient credit exists the player will be notified of the options available, i.e. reduce columns, reduce bet, add cash to bank.
  • the array 9 is populated with symbols as discussed above. Any sets identified are highlighted on the screen 5 at S312. Where sets are identified and highlighted, as checked at S314, the win evaluation for that round is determined at S316 and the highlighted sets are removed, and the remaining symbols rearranged (as discussed above), at S318. S312 and S314 are then repeated. When no sets are identified at S312, the final win evaluation is determined at S320. The player is then given the choice of whether or not to refill the array 9 at S322. If the player wishes to continue, the empty entries in the array are repopulated with new symbols at S324 (as described above), at a cost to the player, and the game continues as described above through S312 to S324 in a loop.
  • the player is asked whether the whole array 9 should be emptied and refreshed at S326. If the player chooses this, the system returns to S310 and continues as described above. If the player chooses not to continue, the game ends at S328.
  • the gaming apparatus may take any other suitable form, and could for example comprise a game provided on a computing or other electronic device, such as on a personal computer, PDA, mobile phone, or the like.
  • the game may also be provided over an intranet, the Internet, or some other communications system, such as a mobile telephone system, digital television, and client/server systems.
  • the present invention has been described in terms of a basic game, it will be apparent to the skilled reader that it is equally applicable as a feature game within a basic game, for example as a bonus game, where a predetermined level, score or stage in a basic game has been reached and the invention extends to such apparatus and methods. Additionally, the bonus or jackpot game may be offered across a number of linked gaming machines.
  • the present invention also extends to the use of other set determination criteria and also to the use of other symbols, play areas and movements. For example, after removal of symbols, the remaining symbols could be rearranged by moving upwardly, sideways, inwardly or outwardly of a play area.
  • the play area and symbols could also take a more free form, without having to move in grid directions, and sets could be formed by touching symbols. It is to be understood that various alterations, additions and/or modifications may be made to the parts previously described without departing from the ambit of the present invention, and that, in the light of the above teachings, the present invention may be implemented in software, firmware and/or hardware in a variety of manners as would be understood by the skilled person.

Abstract

L'invention concerne un dispositif de jeu, se présentant dans un premier mode de réalisation sous la forme d'une machine de jeu électronique (1).
