Definitions

  • a major problem with known non-invasive systems is that of identifying trie probe transmitting data in a group of probes. Probes must be separately identified, and there is often a deg ree of uncertainty as to the origin of the signal received. Th is is particularly the case where the probes are moving, for example in the case of a herd of cows, or where probes are situated in close proximity of one another.
  • Methods of monitoring specific parameters in other fields of technology similarly face problems in that in the case where multiple probes are placed in multiple vessels it may be difficult to identify each probe and to correspond this with the correct value measured. Again, there is often a degree of uncertainty as to the origin of the signal received.
  • An example of this is in horticultural support systems where certain parameters of a number of vessels situated relatively closely to one another must be monitored. A system is required to accurately determine the identity of the vessel to which a specific measurement relates, and the most reliable way in which to do this is to determine these two pieces of data independently of one another.
  • monitoring devices are difficult to insert into a vessel, either because of the contents of the vessel or because the vessel is inaccessible. Current systems also have a problem in that the cabling is difficult to seal against fluid ingress.
  • Non-invasive parameter monitoring methods such as the use of an autonomous pH or temperature probe
  • Probes of this type transmit data detected by a sensor in the probe via radio signals.
  • These systems generally employ an ID tag within the probe which is associated with a unique ID code within the probe, and the ID code is transmitted from the probe, together with data relating to a measured parameter, in a single signal upon wireless interrogation of the probe. Any interference experienced can therefore affect the information received in respect of the ID and measurement data, and if there is a problem with the probe transmitter or battery, no information is received at all.
  • ID tag and reader in the monitoring system allows each vessel to be identified, and these can communicate via RF transmission, as can the parameter monitoring device and monitoring device reader. These two transmissions are capable of operating independently of one another, dependent upon a user's requests.
  • the parameter monitoring device, or sensor, of the present invention may be a glass bulb pH electrode, which is designed, together with the reference junction of the device, to be stable for at least 60 days.
  • the device can take the form of a bolus.
  • the device is non-invasive and can be designed to be small enough to be placed easily in the mouth of an animal, and to travel down the throat of the animal.
  • the device is further arranged to be retained, in use, in a vessel.
